Toss-Ups

1) In this novel's final chapter, the narrator pretends to be a priest in order to buy a box of amyls before comparing himself to "a monster reincarnation of Horatio Alger". That narrator nearly dies after overdosing on adrenochrome the night before he impersonates a private investigator at a conference on "dangerous drugs". In its first section, a Samoan lawyer high on acid demands that the narrator throw a radio into his bathtub when the song "White Rabbit" peaks, an event which occurs after the protagonists take a nightmarish trip on ether through Circus-Circus. Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo drive through "Bat Country" before reaching the title city in, FTP, this novel by Hunter S. Thompson.

2) The four player mode had players flying in vehicles, although it was very difficult to control them. The game’s plot sees the antagonist luring the protagonist into a virtual world, which is used to explain the limit on the protagonist’s powers. One of the main obstacles in the game are explained as being part of a “maze” but they are little more than a series of rings that must be flown through. 3) Ties are broken by each player answering a numerical question. The grand prize was changed to $25,000 in the second season, as the original prize of winning a position working with the host was left unclaimed in the first season, even though Curt Spear, a resident of Woodbridge, Virginia won. Round two is unique in that the host does not compete against the contestants, instead the players go head to head in rounds such as Who Am I and Alma Matters, of which the namesake host’s is St. John’s. She has also worked for Penthouse and Hustler, and her recent work has featured a lot of bondage. 8) This chorus free song was the only one from its original album put on the band’s 2003 greatest hits compilation. The video for this song was incorrectly rumored to have been banned in Ireland, and much of the imagery in it was inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings. It was the first video to feature the lead singer of the band dancing, and its title comes a Southern expression of dispossessing faith and it does not overtly deal with theological topics. 9) Originally drafted in the 4th round by the Athletics in 2002, this MississippiState player stayed to try to reach the College World Series, and was drafted in the fourth round the following year. After a short stint with single-A Lowell in 2003, he quickly moved through Sarasota, Portland, and Pawtucket, reaching the majors in late 2005. He briefly wore a mohawk because of his 25 and a third scoreless innings to open the 2006 season, and will be a starter in 2007 despite finishing with an ERA under one and 35 saves after filling in for the injured Keith Foulke. Finishing second to Justin Verlander in the Rookie of the Year voting, FTP, identify this rookie closer for the Boston Red Sox.

10) Prior to the release of their first album in 1997, the band featured Michael Urbano, who until 2006 was the drummer of Smash Mouth, and they now have Brad Hargreaves in his place. Their later, less popular albums include Blue and Out of the Vein. 12) A sequel to this movie that was to be set in World War II was abandoned after it went over budget, with the remaining money going to the film, Pearl Harbor. It featured one of the last film appearances of Mae Questel, who was well into her seventies when she played a waitress at the Ink and Paint Club. Franz List's Second Hungarian Rhapsody is the song being played in a duel between two pianists there that gets way out of hand. The whole plot of the film centers around murders that need to be solved by a detective and his new partner, specifically those of R. K. Maroon, Teddy Valiant and Marvin Acme. 13) The album that the original version of this 1984 song was on ended with the track It’s You by lead singer Mark Hollis and also contained the hit single, Dum Dum Girl. There were two versions of the original song’s music video, both of which make statements about lip-synching. The second video consists of the first, which featured lots of natural animal footage, projected on a green screen behind the band mates’ exaggerated miming. 19) It won seven academy awards, four BAFTA awards, and five Golden Globes. Based on what year you saw it in, the length varied from between 187 minutes and the original 222 minutes.

Later releases of this work saw its length cut to 202 and then 187 minutes, mostly losing scenes that involved the title character’s writings. The director of this film’s first choice to play the title character was Albert Finney and he also wanted Alec Guinness, who was deemed too old and chosen for another role. The protagonist states “nothing is written” before embarking on a plan to save a stranded man from the desert. 22) Pope Alexander VI chose him as his private architect and consultant and during the Third Reich, Hitler sought out his works, which included designs for transistors and cell phone technology, impressive as he was born in 1444. Named after an Oscar-winning visual effects artist who worked on the film E.T., he is more famous for his prophecies, which include a picture of a woman who will “render the greatest power unto utter desolation.” That picture on page 47 of his manuscript bears a remarkable resemblance to Sydney Bristow.
