2) Infant Mental Health Conference Toronto April 21, 22

I attended this conference with Gillian Jackson.

The conference is cross-sector in nature… physicians, ECEs, public health, school boards,

special needs services, researchers…. All working towards the same vision

Highlights included:

Dr. Judy Cameron – correlation between brain development and emotional development.

Message: stable, caring relationships are key to brain development in infants.

Jean Clinton – 30% of kids are arriving at school with some kind of vulnerability.

We need to enhance 18 month well baby visit and identify other ways to have conversations

about development with families “We need a system to identify delay/disorder and risk of

developmental problems much earlier than Kindergarten”

How Does Learning Happen? We need a community response, not limited to one sector

Need to take a developmental “temperature” in a systematic community-based way.

Jean introduced the Infant Mental Health Policy Paper for Ontario. The emphasis will be on

developing the capacity of the child to:

  • form close adult and peer relationships
  • experience, manage, and express a full range of emotions
  • explore the environment and learn

(All in the context of family, community)

Lead in Mental Health Transformation – Ministry will identify questions for response by

lead mental health agencies: Now that we have defined core services what does it look like?

in 0 to 6 population? What does the pathway look like for 0 to 6 population?

CANS Presentation – by communities that have adopted CANS as well as the professor

who developed it – “CANS is a practice model; you are measuring to communicate”

Jean Clinton and John Cairney – cautioned against using Nippissing Screening Tool

without a conversation with the family… many conversations over time
