Project Aquatic

1. Describe your project in a summary paragraph.

The Project that I am planning to apply for money from CTAHPERD will be an after school swimming program for inner city students. Along with learning swimming skills such as strokes, safety, and social skills I hope to incorporate a lifeguard training class for students for free. I hope to work with the Red Cross in getting the students CPR and first aide certified along with lifeguard training. The school these students come from does not have a swimming pool, so I hope to work with the local YMCA’s, and recreational facilities in the area that have a pool. The funding that I hope to receive will go towards transportation of the students, renting of the facilities, payment of lifeguards and instructors, and providing the students with lifeguard training manuals, CPR masks, and study materials. This project has been brought to my attention because swimming is not offered to most of the inner city schools if any. Swimming is an important lifetime skill children should be offered to learn. There were over four thousand drowning deaths last year, and almost half of fatalities were due to the fact that the person could not swim. I feel it will do these students a great service to learn how to prevent injury around an aquatic setting, and learn to swim.

2. What is the main idea of this project? Describe how this project will meet the needs of the students?

The main idea of this project as I previously stated is to prevent injury around an aquatic setting, spread the word of safety to people who do not know how to swim, teach the students how to swim, and hopefully give the students a chance to possibly get a job. The project will teach beginning swimmers how to actually swim by way of licensed swim instructors. The students will learn basics of free style swimming, and floating both on backs and the front of their bodies. Students with moderate to advanced swimming abilities will be given the chance to further their abilities in higher advanced classes. Also students with advanced swimming abilities will be given the chance to take lifeguard, CPR, and first aide certification classes. The students who receive and pass these certification classes will also be given the opportunity to apply for life guarding jobs once they pass the examinations.

3. Give a time line/schedule of events.

These are high school level students, and their schedule for beginning swimming lessons will go from 2:30 to 3:45 Mondays and Wednesdays for two eight week sessions, and for a total of sixteen classes. The moderate to advanced swimming lessons will go from 2:30 to 3:30 on Tuesdays, and Thursdays for the same duration of time. The Lifeguard training classes are difficult to schedule during the week, so these selected students will go from 12:00-4:00 on Sundays, and will go for eight weeks. To be certified for lifeguard training you must attend a 30-35 hour training course through the Red Cross. Students will have to sign a contract to fulfill the swimming and lifeguard course in order to attend. Students who will not finish will not be allowed to participate, because their could be students elsewhere who wish to participate who do not get the chance.

4. Approximately how many students will be affected?

Ideally I wish to get twenty-five to thirty-five students enrolled in the actual swimming classes. Out of those 25-35 students I wish to get at least ten to twelve students in the lifeguard training course. The students who are allowed to participate will range from sophomores to seniors. Freshman will not be allowed to participate yet. Students who participate must maintain a 2.5 GPA prior to and during the start of the swimming classes. Also if a student has a suspension or more than two behavioral referrals they will not be allowed to participate.

5. How will you determine whether your objectives have been achieved and whether your project is successful?

I will determine whether my objective is successful by assessing the students. In order to complete the swimming and lifeguard training classes the students must keep a journal of every class they attend during these classes. If a student is enrolled in swimming and lifeguard training classes they must keep two detailed journals. Each class whether it is beginning swimming, moderate to advanced swimming, and lifeguard certification will have an exit exam witch each student must complete. The exams for the swimming classes will have only swimming activities for the students witch will be instructor based observations. There will not be a written exam for any swimming classes. In the lifeguard training class the students will have to pass a written CPR and first aide examination along with a lifeguard examination. Once they have passed the written exam they must complete a five hundred yard swimming exam, along with treading water for five minutes with out stopping. The last part of their exam will have them complete a swimming rescue, and CPR rescue.

6. Are you applying for funds from additional revenue sources?

I am applying for funding elsewhere. I am planning to apply for funding from the local Red Cross, and I am also applying for student and family scholarships from the local YMCA’s. Along with this we plan to raise funds by having swimming functions from staff, local swimmers, and students who are on local swim teams. The students will raise money and get pledges from the community, and then compete in swimming races at a local swimming pool. All proceeds will go to benefit our swimming program.

7. Detail your budget request. Use a separate page if necessary. List specific brands, descriptions, quantities, catalog numbers or part numbers, and shipping costs etc.

We are requesting $1,000 from CTAHPERD, and collecting money elsewhere for this program. The cost of lifeguard training per student would be three hundred dollars. After we have discussed training for the students we got a student discount of one hundred dollars per students for certifications, books, and CPR masks. For five-day pool rentals for a total of sixteen weeks the local YMCA will let us rent out the pool for a total of fifteen hundred dollars. The swimming lessons for students will cost fifty dollars per person per session. If each student attends both sessions it will come out to one hundred dollars for the program. For 35 students it will cost $3,500 for swimming lessons, $1,500 for the pool rental $1,000 for ten students to become lifeguard certified, and $2,000 for transportation of the students. This will approximately come out to a total of $8,000.
