Your journals will encompass the following five elements for each section. Each journal will be 1 – 1 ½ pages long with each of the following clearly labeled.Annotating the text is also required for full credit for this novel only—use post-its if you have checked out a library copy of the novel.

  1. Characters: List the key characters who appear in the section, with the information available to you at this time – their role, relationships with others, and any other relevant information.
  2. Ideas, Techniques, Images, and Patterns:What idea, technique, image, or pattern stands out in this section? Quote the text and discuss. If it’s an image or an image pattern, consider the details of the image. Speculate about what you think its significance could be.
  3. Expression: What has Woolf expressed here – emotionally, psychologically, and artistically? What is the effect on the reader of what she is doing?
  4. Questions: What questions are you left with? What confuses you at this point?
  5. Think comparatively: What similarity or difference in: setting, character, theme, idea, structure, etc. (choose one) do you notice between this novel and Pride and Prejudice? What’s interesting about the similarity or difference?
