1. contract – n – a legal written agreement between two people, two companies, etc.

  • The teachers went on strike because the school wouldn’t agree to change their contract.
  • A lease is a contract between a tenant and a landlord. Each one agrees to be responsible for different things.

2. environment – n – the land, water and air in which people, animals and plants live.

  • We need stronger pollution laws to protect the environment.
  • My work environment is comfortable and safe.

3. legal – allowed, ordered or approved by law

antonym = illegal, against the law

  • The legal drinking age in Illinois is 21.
  • My friend from Poland has legal status here as an immigrant, but she can’t vote because she is not a citizen.
  • It is legal for 16 year-olds to get a drivers license in Illinois.

4. indicate – v – to show that something exists or is likely to be true

  • If I see students frowning, I think it indicates they don’t understand something.
  • There is a sign on the highway that indicates the correct exit for the state park.
  • The capital of the state is indicated on the map with a star.

5. role – n – position, job or function a person has

  • I have many roles—teacher, wife, worker, daughter, etc.
  • The role of a teacher is to plan and deliver instruction, while the role of a student is to study and learn.

6. conduct – v – to do something in an organized way to get information or prove facts

  • Medical researchers conduct experiments to find new treatments for diseases.
  • The FBI is conducting investigations of the financial firms that collapsed recently.
  • When I conduct class, I try to keep the students active.

7. previous – adj – happening before a particular event or time

synonym – prior

  • I was hired for my job because I had previous experience in education.
  • On my previous visit to the dentist, he found two cavities.
  • (adverb form) My sister has lost a lot of weight. Previously, she was quite heavy.

8. site – n – a place where something important or interesting happened

  • There is a memorial sculpture at the site of the WorldTradeCenter.
  • I saw many historical sites when I went to Rome.
  • Chicago may be the site of the Olympics in 2016.

9. constraint – n – something that restricts what you are doing

  • There are many travel constraints now, like security checks, no liquids, limits on the number of bags, etc.
  • At Brookfield Zoo, many years ago an elephant named Ziggy broke free of his constraints and escaped.

10. sequence – n – the order that things are supposed to be in or be done

  • There was a sequence of events that led to our war in Iraq.
  • I told the students to arrange the rocks in a sequence from the largest to the smallest.
  • I always follow the same sequence of steps when I plan a vacation. First I decide the dates, then I book my flight, and then I get a hotel room.
