September 6, 2007

Present: J. Owens, C. Lathrop, G. Deforest, D. Latimer, J. Fisher, S. McAfee, M. Brackin, W. Mcnamara, M. Munson, J. Kozlowski

1.  A lot of accidents during the beginning of the semester

17 accidents in 2007 until 8/9/0/7

6 since 8/9/07 (25%)

4 of the 17 happened in the first 4 week of classes in Jan/Feb

Most recent accidents:

Cut fingers 3 – glass, jammed between door and equip

Burn hot h2O

Cart tip and hit head

Reasons for beginning of semester accidents:

New employees/students

Existing employees not physically use to working/lifting

New equipment and new units – new hazards

Thing to Do:

Observe employees work habits and correct as necessary

Proactively remind employees of the hazards in their area

Post posters and notices and rotate them to keep their focus on safety

2.  Medical treatment and transportation

Encourage employees to use their family doctor or the CMC (Rte. 281) Convenient Care Center. This is a shorter wait and less expensive for non-emergency items. We can’t force employees to go there, but we can encourage.

3.  Documentation, even if not an accident

Ambulance rides for personal medical conditions- chest pain, fainting, high BP

Feel pain at work because of an off work accident

4.  Recap of Workplace Violence incident in Neubig

Student making threats of shooting and blowing up people and classes

Fingers shaped like a gun and shooting at the back of someone’s head

See something, say something – Please inform your employees

Call UPD and let them judge what is or is not appropriate

5.  Corey loading dock progress is making. The company did not complete the job correctly and so it will be reworked but not until we cannot drive on it and the temp is high enough.

6.  Employee complaint of being “Locked” in a cooler. Jim Owens stated that he has three times taken the mechanism apart at Hilltop and there is nothing wrong. The employees must push and hold down the release mechanism, and not just punch and let go.

Old Issues

1.  New mats in Corey and Commissary. Steve has his measurement and Linda will send Steve her mat measurement. Update at the next safety meeting.

2.  Overhang of dock at Brockway. Work order place in April with no response. Another was placed September 2007 and accepted.

New Items

1.  Automatic faucets in the Old Main women’s room (near Den) do not work in either sink and has not worked for a while. A work order was sent.

2.  Fire System alarm (not for an actual fire, just system updates) was going off for over 5 hours in the shipping area of the Bookstore this week. We are unable to reset. UPD is to be called when it happens but they do not respond. State maintenance workers do not respond in a timely manner, if or when they are notify by UPD. An email was sent to new Director of Facilitates, Equipment and Planning to look into ASC’s ability to reset this alarm quickly.
