CGW 4UI Careers in Geography
PART A)
The University of Waterloo is just one of many post-secondary paths you can follow if you choose to pursue a career in geography. For this part of this activity, you’ll be using UW’s Faculty of Environment website to explore just a sampling of the geography-related careers available to you. Follow the instructions below and answer the questions either on lined paper or you may type them up in Word. All answers must be in your own words -No cut and paste!

Click on ‘School of Planning’ and then click on “What is Planning” in the “Quick Links” on the right hand side of the page.
2. In your own words, explain what ‘planning’ is and what ‘planners do’.
Return to the Homepage, and select ‘School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED)’
3. What is the focus of SEED?
Click on ‘News’ on the left side of the page and select an article which shows that SEED people are making a real difference in the community.

The Canadian Geoscience Education Network developed the following website to help people consider a career in the Earth Sciences. For more information about this field and possible careers and to answer the following questions go to: http://www.earthsciencescanada.com/careers/
1. Click on “Start: What is Earth Science”. Read “What is Earth Science” and then click on “What do Earth Scientists Do?”
Read the 10 things that Earth Scientists do. Choose 2 that would be of interest to you and explain why.
2. Click on “What’s in it for You”. Choose 2 (of the 6) that apply the most to you and explain why.
3. Go back to the top and choose “What Can I Be?” Click on the “A-Z List of Jobs” sign post. After scrolling through the A to Z list of careers/jobs, choose 3 that you would like to do and explain why.
4. Go back to the top and choose “How Much Can I Make?” What are the typical start up wages (per hour, per year) for an Earth Scientist and how does that compare to minimum wage?
5. Click on “Job Prospects” and “Job Comparisons”. How do Earth Science job prospects earnings compare to other careers?
