Chapter 13

2. What memory does Jonas receive that makes him see the color red as blood? The hacking of an elephant’s tusks (poaching)
3. What happened to the memories 10 years ago when the previous Receiver failed? They were released into the community. How did it affect the community? It was chaos. They suffered for a while.
4. Why is a Receiver necessary in the community? To hold the memories and advise the committee about things they have not experienced before.
Chapter 14
1. What memory does the Giver give Jonas for him to first feel physical pain? A sled ride on an icy slope. He suffers a broken leg.
2. Why do Jonas and the Giver have to hold painful memories? It gives them wisdom (to advise).
3. Why can’t everyone have memories to share? They don’t want pain. No burdens.
4. What’s wrong with Gabriel? He is fretful at night.
5. How does Jonas get Gabriel to sleep? Transmits a memory of a sailboat.
