Objectives
The intent of this education program is to provide new oncology nurses with basic core knowledge in the nursing care of people with cancer, from which ongoing learning and skill may be pursued. This program is not designed to measure individual competency; but will deliver standardized basic clinical oncology education for nurses in the Puget Sound Region.
1. Explain the pathophysiology and diagnostic evaluation of cancer, and the rationale and common side effects of cancer treatments.
2. Describe the natural history, common treatment and nursing management of the following malignant processes: breast cancer, gynecological cancers, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, lymphoma, and leukemia.
3. Apply appropriate nursing interventions for patients experiencing: pain, immunocompromise, oncologic emergencies, neurologic alterations, nutritional alternations, and psychosocial distress.

Contact hours are provided. Participant must sign-in no later than 15 minutes from start, attend full day, and submit completed evaluation before leaving to receive contact hours for sessions attended. Partial credits for the day are not provided.
