2. SGSU Charity Registration – An Update

The Trac’10 project was given the go ahead at AGM in 2008, and it was implemented. The charity commission stated that Student’s Union’s could not remain as an exempt charity. This meant that we had to register as a charity. The deadline is the end of the 2011 tax year. In preparation for this registration, the new constitution was passed at EGM and this allowed us to start forming the trustee board.

The trustee board will consist of external trustees, student trustees, staff trustees and the 4 senior officers. We are currently recruiting external trustees – there are 7 applications so far, and the Appointments Committee will be appointing them in due course.

Elections for Student Trustees will be in May, alongside SU officer elections. 1 student trustee will be in office for one year and the other for 2 years.

With regards to the actual application, the form is completed, it just requires figures from our accounts to be added. We will be inputting about £1.6 million into the turnover box. From August 08 – Jul 09 the SU made about £500,000 profit. The full accounts will be going to AGM for approval.

The Appointments Committee have also made recommendations to co-opt staff members onto the trustee board. These recommendations now need to be ratified by SU Council.

PROPOSAL BY RS: I PROPOSE THAT COUNCIL ACCEPTS THE TRUSTEE BOARD RECOMMENDATION TO INVITE PATRICIA HUGHES TO SIT ON TRUSTEE BOARD. PATRICIA HUGHES HAS WORKED VERY CLOSELY WITH SGSU FOR INUMBERABLE YEARS. SHE HAS LOTS OF EXPERTEISE IN MANY AREAS INCLUDING HIGHER EDUCATION AND AN INTRICATE KNOWLEDGE OF SGSU BUSINESSES AS SHE IS THE CURRENT LINE MANGER FOR THE STAFF WORKING IN THESE BUSINESSES. SHE TRULY HAS STUDENTS BEST INTRESRTS AT HEART AND WITHIN HER ROLE OFFERS GREAT ADVICE AND SUPPORT TO THE SENIOR OFFICERS ON A REGULAR BASIS.

HE HAS DEMONSTRATED COMMITMENT TO CHARITABLE ACTIVITES AS HE IS CURRENTLY A LONG-STANDING MEMBER OF THE UNIVERITY OF LONDON TRUSTEE BOARD.
