1.1 Lifeboat survival manual (Part I)

As a main guide for this unit, you will have to read the whole manual you'll find below.


/ Reading and understanding a MANUAL

To start with, you should read the first part of the manual on your own (pages 1-11), with the help of a glossary which includes the main terms of the text that you may not understand or know.

Activity 1

After the reading activity, you will practise some vocabulary about the body and health. The first box with basic links isn't compulsory. They are highly recommended for students with a lower level of English or problems in basic skills.

Activity 2

Now, fill in the blanks with a suitable verb from the text (some of them included in the glossary):

The importance of lifeboat survival manuals
Perhaps the most difficult survival situation to be in is sea survival. Short- or long-term survival depends upon rations and equipment available and your ingenuity. You must be resourceful to survive.

1.2 Lifeboat survival manual (Part II)

The second part of the manual (pages 11-20) should be read without any glossary. You must be able to use different sources to understand the text and create your own personal glossary.

Activity 3

After reading the second part, do your own glossary and answer the following questions:

  • Can injured people eat extra rations or water?
  • Why isn't it possible to eat fish or sea birds if you don't have plenty supply of water?
  • What is the main thing you must remember when being rescued by helicopter?
  • What are the qualities needed to survive in case of abandonment?
  • Which item of the following is not included in the life boat equiment list?A whistle, a first aid kit, two portable fire extinguishers, four parachute red rockets, extra clothing, engine tools and one sea anchor.

Activity 4

Write a list in your notes with the immediate actions to be taken.

Activity 5

Vocabulary. Look carefully at the following picture and name the different objects that are labelled.

A great tool to learn new words and speacialised terms is the reading of “paralel texts” either in Spanish or English, where you can find the explanations and translations of the terms mentioned in the manual you've read.
