05 March 2018 History G.C.S.E First World War Battlefields Tour

Dear Parents/Guardians

As part of the G.C.S.E course, your son/daughter is studying the First World War. In order to complement classroom teaching and to deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of the topic an optional three day/two night fieldtrip to the Somme Battlefields in France and the Ypres Salient in Belgium has been organised in association with Anglia Battlefields Tours.

The proposed dates for the trip are 14th – 16th July 2018, staying in accommodation just outside Ypres.

The cost of this trip will be £ 300.00 which includes:

Transport – via coach and cross-channel shuttle/ferry

Insurance cover.

Full-board accommodation (please note students will need to bring their own packed lunch for the first day, while travelling to France)

The services of professional and expert tour guides throughout the trip and during the evenings.

Information and work booklet.

Pupils will also need a small amount of spending money, their own passport and aEuropean Health Card.

There are initially 60 places available on this trip and in order to secure a place a £50 deposit will be required – paid into the Parent Pay Account “Battlefields 2018”, by Friday February 23rd February. If there are more deposits placed than places available then we will hold a ‘draw’ verified by a member of the SLT in order to allocate places. Deposits will be refunded if necessary.

If you have problems raising all the necessary funding, please contact the Finance Office immediately to request assistance.

Payments will be due as outlined below:

Friday 23rdFebruary / Deposit / £50
Thursday 29th March / Second payment Parent Pay* / £150
Friday 11h May / Balance Parent Pay* / £100

Once places have been confirmed for the trip, we will send out further information. This will include the medical form, request for Passport photocopy and photocopy of European Health Card and other important paperwork.

We have enjoyed extremely successful tours to the battlefields with the same company over many years. Students have continually found the experience invaluable and often deeply moving. The trip has proved very effective in building upon the students’ knowledge and understanding of the topic. The schedule is intense and students should not expect a holiday/shopping trip.

Please also complete the permission page and return it to Pupil Reception.

Yours sincerely

Mrs K Dubost, Mrs T Chatfield and Mr T Bailey,

History Team
