PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1RELATED DOCUMENTS

1.3DEFINITIONS

  1. Railings: Guards, handrails, and similar devices used for protection of occupants at open-sided floor areas and for pedestrian guidance and support, visual separation, or wall protection.

1.4COORDINATION AND SCHEDULING

  1. Coordinate selection of shop primers with topcoats to be applied over them. Comply with paint and coating manufacturers' written instructions to ensure that shop primers and topcoats are compatible.
  2. Coordinate installation of anchorages for railings. Furnish setting drawings, templates, and directions for installing anchorages, including sleeves, concrete inserts, anchor bolts, and items with integral anchors, that are to be embedded in concrete or masonry. Deliver items to Project site in time for installation.

1.5PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS

Retain "Preinstallation Conference" Paragraph below if Work of this Section is extensive or complex enough to justify a conference.

1.6ACTION SUBMITTALS

Delete "Samples for Initial Selection" Paragraph below if colors and other characteristics are preselected and specified or scheduled. Delete option if no bronze or stainless steel. Retain "Samples for Verification" Paragraph below with or without "Samples for Initial Selection" Paragraph.

1.8QUALITY ASSURANCE

Retain “Mockups” Paragraph below for Custom designrailing systems.

  1. Mockups: Build mockups to verify selections made under Sample submittals, to demonstrate aesthetic effects, and to set quality standards for fabrication and installation.

Retain one of first two subparagraphs below. Mockups may be designed as separate decorative elements and left in place.

  1. Build mockups as [a tabletop or cut-down version] [onesection of rail] [shown on Drawings].
  2. Build mockups for each form and finish of railing consisting of two posts, top rail, infill area, and anchorage system components that are full height and are not less than 24 inches (600 mm) in length.

Retain subparagraph below if the intention is to make an exception to the default requirement in Section014000 "Quality Requirements" for demolishing and removing mockups.

  1. Subject to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.

1.9PRECONSTRUCTION TESTING

Retain this article for preconstruction testing. Project-specific preconstruction testing of assemblies can be expensive but may be the best means of proving that performance requirements are met.

  1. Preconstruction Testing Service: [Owner will engage] [Engage] a qualified testing agency to perform preconstruction testing on laboratory mockups. Payment for these services will be made [by Owner] [from the testing and inspecting allowance, as authorized by Change Orders] [by Contractor]. Retesting of products that fail to meet specified requirements shall be done at Contractor's expense.

Indicate size and other details of laboratory mockups on Drawings or by inserts.

  1. Build laboratory mockups at testing agency facility; use personnel, materials, and methods of construction that will be used at Project site.
  2. Test railings according to ASTME894 and ASTME935.
  3. Notify Architect [seven] <Insert number> days in advance of the dates and times when laboratory mockups will be tested.

1.10FIELD CONDITIONS

If possible, design railings so they do not have to fit other construction, and delete this article.

  1. Field Measurements: Verify actual locations of walls and other construction contiguous with railings by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

See Editing Instruction No.1 in the Evaluations for cautions about named manufacturers and products. For an explanation of options and Contractor's product selection procedures, see Section016000 "Product Requirements."

2.1MANUFACTURERS

  1. Source Limitations: Obtain each type of railing from single source from single manufacturer.
  2. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide VIVA Railings, LLC; [SABRE] or comparable product by one of the following:
  3. Blum, Julius & Co., Inc.
  4. CraneVeyor Corp.
  5. Morse Industries.
  6. Tri Tech, Inc.
  7. Wylie Systems.
  8. Insert manufacturer's name>.

Coordinate with Division01 requirements.

Standard VIVA Railings are fabricated using stainless steel pipe, tubing, and plate.

Product options include custom fabrications using aluminum or steel with various finishes in lieu of stainless steel.

Standard infill panels have the option of being made from stainless steel, aluminum, copper, or copper alloys.

  1. Product Options: Drawings indicate size, profiles, and dimensional requirements of railings and are based on the specific system indicated. See Section016000 "Product Requirements."
  2. Do not modify intended aesthetic effects, as judged solely by Architect, except with Architect's approval. If modifications are proposed, submit comprehensive explanatory data to Architect for review.

2.2PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. General: In engineering railings to withstand structural loads indicated, determine allowable design working stresses of railing materials based on the following:
  2. Aluminum: The lesser of minimum yield strength divided by 1.65 or minimum ultimate tensile strength divided by 1.95.
  3. Stainless Steel: 60 percent of minimum yield strength.

Retain "Glass" Subparagraph below for glass-supported railings. Requirement is based on the 2006 International Building Code (IBC) for safety factor of 4.

  1. Glass: 25 percent of mean modulus of rupture (50 percent probability of breakage), as listed in "Mechanical Properties" in AAMA's Aluminum Curtain Wall Series No.12, "Structural Properties of Glass."
  1. Structural Performance: Railings, including attachment to building construction, shall withstand the effects of gravity loads and the following loads and stresses within limits and under conditions indicated:

Subparagraphs below are based on the IBC; revise to suit Project and to comply with requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

  1. Handrails and Top Rails of Guards:
  2. Uniform load of 50 lbf/ft. (0.73 kN/m) applied in any direction.
  3. Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89 kN) applied in any direction.
  4. Uniform and concentrated loads need not be assumed to act concurrently.
  5. Infill of Guards:
  6. Concentrated load of 50 lbf (0.22 kN) applied horizontally on an area of 1 sq. ft. (0.093 sq.m).
  7. Infill load and other loads need not be assumed to act concurrently.
  8. Glass-Supported Railings: Support each section of top rail by a minimum of three glass panels or by other means so top rail will remain in place if any one panel fails.

Delete "Thermal Movements" Paragraph below if only interior railings are required.

  1. Thermal Movements: Allow for thermal movements from ambient and surface temperature changes acting on exterior railings by preventing buckling, opening of joints, overstressing of components, failure of connections, and other detrimental effects.

Differential values in "Temperature Change" Subparagraph below (for aluminum in particular) are suitable for most of the United States.

  1. Temperature Change: 120 degF (67 degC), ambient; 180 degF (100 degC), material surfaces.

2.3METALS, GENERAL

  1. Metal Surfaces, General: Provide materials with smooth surfaces, without seam marks, roller marks, rolled trade names, stains, discolorations, or blemishes.
  2. Brackets, Flanges, and Anchors: Same metal and finish as supported rails unless otherwise indicated.
  3. Provide cast-stainless steel wall brackets with flange tapped for concealed anchorage with vertical and horizontal adjustment capability.

2.4STAINLESS STEEL

Retain material types, qualities, and grades in this article that are indicated in Specifications or on Drawings. Type304 stainless steel is usually standard; Type316 gives better corrosion resistance in coastal environments. See Evaluations. Grade designations "MT," "TP," and "CF" below relate to the form of metal (tubing, pipe, or castings) being specified.

Primary difference between round stainless-steel tubing and stainless-steel pipe is in outside dimensions. Pipe sizes are normally indicated by using nominal pipe size designator and weight class or schedule number; for tubing, OD and wall thickness are used.

  1. Tubing: ASTMA554, [GradeMT304] [GradeMT316].
  2. Pipe: ASTMA312/A312M, [GradeTP304] [GradeTP316].

Retain first option in "Castings" Paragraph below with Type304; retain second option with Type316 or 316L.

  1. Castings: ASTMA743/A743M, [GradeCF8 or CF20] [GradeCF8M or CF3M].
  2. Sheet, Strip, Plate, and Flat Bar: ASTMA666 or ASTMA240/A240M, [Type304] [Type316].
  3. Bars and Shapes: ASTMA276, [Type304] [Type316].

2.5GLASS AND GLAZING MATERIALS

Glass panel infills can be used in BLADE, CIRCA, CUBE, FIN, VIEW, SOLO, SHOE, SABRE, VISIO and ELLIPSE Railing Systems by VIVA Railings. Custom designs are also available from VIVA Railings.

Maximum glass panel widthsvary from 4’-0” (1.219 m) to 5’-0” (1.524 m)according to Railing System used.

  1. Safety Glazing: Glazing shall comply with 16CFR1201, CategoryII.
  2. Tempered Glass: ASTMC1048, KindFT (fully tempered), ConditionA (uncoated), Type1 (transparent flat glass), Quality-Q3. Provide products that have been tested for surface and edge compression according to ASTMC1048 and for impact strength according to 16CFR1201 for CategoryII materials.
  3. Glass Color: [Clear] [Azuria] [Blue-green] [Bronze] [Gray] <Insert color>.

Retain one or more thickness requirements in five subparagraphs below. Tinted glass is not available in thicknesses more than 0.47 inch (12 mm). Verify thickness by structural analysis. Verify, with railing manufacturers, availability of glass thicknesses.

  1. Thickness for Glass Infill Panels:[0.5 inch(12 mm)].
  2. Thickness: As indicated on Drawings.
  1. Laminated Glass: ASTMC1172, ConditionA (uncoated), TypeI (transparent flat glass), Quality-Q3 with two plies of glass and interlayer.

Retain "Basis-of-Design Product" Subparagraph and list of manufacturers below to identify a specific product or a comparable product from manufacturers listed. Delete insert note if manufacturer's name and model number are indicated on Drawings.Glass supplier for VIVA Railings is based on project material requirements and regional location.

  1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Insert manufacturer's name; product name or designation or comparable product by one of the following:
  2. Insert, in separate subparagraphs, manufacturer's name.

Retain one of three kinds in "Kind" Subparagraph below or retain "As indicated" option and indicate kinds required in "Glazing Panel Fabrication" Article.

  1. Kind: [LT (laminated tempered)] [As indicated].
  2. Glass Color: [Clear] [Azuria] [Blue-green] [Bronze] [Gray] <Insert color>.

Retain one of the following two “Interlayer” subparagraphs. VIVA Railings recommends SGP as it is structurally stronger than PVB.

  1. Interlayer: SGP; [0.035 inch (0.89 mm)] [0.060 inch (1.53 mm)]thick.
  2. Interlayer Color: [Clear] [Translucent White].
  3. Interlayer: PVB; 0.060 inch(1.52 mm)thick.
  4. Interlayer Color: [Clear] [Blue-green] [Bronze light] [Gray] <Insert color>.

Retain one or more thickness requirements in four subparagraphs below. Verify thickness by structural analysis. Verify, with railing manufacturers, availability of glass thicknesses.

  1. Glass Plies for Glass Infill Panels: Thickness required by structural loads, but not less than[0.24 inch(6 mm)] each.

If retaining "Ceramic-Coated Glass" Paragraph below, also retain "Laminated Glass" or "Tempered Glass" Paragraph above. Ceramic-coated laminated glass must be laminated tempered.

  1. Ceramic-Coated Glass: Heat-treated float glass, ConditionC; with ceramic enamel applied by silk-screened process; complying with SpecificationNo.95-1-31 in GANA's "Engineering Standards Manual" and with other requirements specified.

Glass supplier for VIVA Railings is based on project material requirements and regional location.

  1. Glass Color: [Clear] [Azuria] [Blue-green] [Bronze] [Gray] <Insert color>.
  2. Ceramic Coating Color and Pattern: [Ceramic frit] [Patterned ceramic frit] [As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range];Insert manufacturer's color and pattern designation>.

Retain "Safety Glazing Labeling" Paragraph below if applicable and if labeling is required. Not all manufacturers participate in third-party testing programs.

  1. Safety Glazing Labeling: Permanently mark glass with certification label of [the SGCC] [the SGCC or another certification agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction] [or] [manufacturer]. Label shall indicate manufacturer's name, type of glass, thickness, and safety glazing standard with which glass complies.

VIVA Railings prefers dry glazing with wet “cement” available when required.

  1. Glazing[Cement and] Accessories for Structural Glazing: [Glazing cement, ]Setting blocks, shims, and related accessories as recommended or supplied by railing manufacturer for installing structural glazing in metal subrails.

Retain "Glazing Cement" Subparagraph below for more specific control over type of glazing material required. Revise to suit products specified.VIVA Railings prefers dry glazing.

  1. Glazing Cement: Nonshrinking organic cement designed for curing by passing an electric current through metal subrail holding glass panel, as standard with manufacturer.

Retain "Glazing Gaskets for Glass Infill Panels" Paragraph below only for post-supported railings with glass infill panels. This is the VIVA Railings’ preferred method.

  1. Glazing Gaskets for Glass Infill Panels: Glazing gaskets and related accessories recommended or supplied by railing manufacturer for installing glass infill panels in post-supported railings.

2.6ILLUMINATED RAILINGS

Revise "General" Paragraph below if using another type of railing. Product below is manufacturer's standard.

  1. General: Comply with requirements in this Section for metal railings with welded connections.
  2. Illuminated Units: Provide internal illumination using concealed, internally wired, 1-1/2-inch (38-mm) diameter stainless steel rail with integral LED-strip fixture system to illuminate walking surfaces adjacent to railings without light leaks. Make provisions for servicing and for concealed connection to electric service. Coordinate electrical characteristics with those of the power supply provided.

VIVA Railings iRAIL can be used as a Top Rail, Glass Top Cap, Assist Rail, Wall Rail or FSR application.
