ZOOQUARIUM is a new young people’s music festival on Hastings Pier.

Inspired by the pier’s musical heritage

Hastings Pier Charity’s Learning and Education department are looking to recruit a keen, enthusiastic and committed individual to help deliver an exciting new music festival for and with young people on Hastings Pier.

Fee: £2500 (approx 38 days)

March (4 days), April (6 days), May (6 days), June (6 days), July (14days), August (2 days)

(6 month placement)

Introduction

The festival will be on Saturday 15th July 2017.The role involves some weekend working and you must be available the week before the festival, the festival day itself and few days afterwards.The role will be based at The Pier Hub on Hastings seafront and on Hastings Pier.

About Us

In May 2016 Hastings Pier reopened thanks to £14.2 million of funding-£11.7 million of this from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The pier now has a restored substructure, new decking, a visitor centre and digital archive, education space, restaurant and a year round programme of events.The HLF has funded a five year Learning, Education and Volunteer programme, which focuses on heritage and community engagement as well as a permanent exhibition interpreting the heritage of Hastings Pier.Hastings Pier is committed to offering equal opportunities.

About the Music Festival

The aim of the project is for the young people (14 to 24 year olds) to lead all aspects of the festival including deciding on the style, tone and content. Expert guidance would be offered where needed to support the young people in marketing, programming, ticketing and all of the technical aspects of delivery on the day such as staging, lighting and sound. The young people will need to learn about event management including aspects of health and safety, risk assessments, budget management and timetabling.As part of the project the YP would learn about Hastings Pier’s musical heritage (learning about bands and music events that took place on the pier in the past) through talks, films and historical researchdelivered by and with HPC’s Education and Learning team.

You will be a creative, well organised and fun loving person. You will enjoy working with and motivating young people. You will have some experience of or ambition to work on festivals and music events. You will be committed and reliable with attention to detail. You will have some understanding of the logistics of putting on a large scale public event and see the opportunities to create a buzz and build momentum for the festival. You will be an advocate for the talent of local young people. You will be calm in busy environments and you will be a practical problem solver.

About the role

The Music Festival Intern will work under the guidance of the Music Festival Coordinator and Hastings Pier Charity’s Education and Volunteers Coordinator - as part of Hastings Pier Charity’s Learning and Education team. The Intern will be line managed by the Music Festival Coordinator. Induction and training will be provided.We will complete a DBS check with the successful candidate (or ask for a copy if you already have one). Task list

The role involves (but is not limited to):

  • Helping the Coordinator with administrative tasks related to the logistics of the festival (programming, stages and back stage, noise management plans, risk assessments, ticketing, policies and procedures, budgets) alongside young people.
  • Helping to involve young people and working alongside them as appropriate (on marketing for example).
  • Assisting in the run up to the festival set up (this might involve helping with ticketing, looking after performers, briefing volunteers, assisting with stage management for example), on the day and helping to pack down.
  • Creating a pack for putting on an in-house festival/event.
  • Helping to collate and input questionnaires.

Hastings Pier Heritage Lottery Fund aims:

  2. Engage with Hastings Pier through volunteering and events
  3. Use Hastings Pier as a gateway to employability
  4. Enjoy their interactions with Hastings Pier

Targets for the festival

Participants: 600 young people, 10 volunteers

Audience: 500 general visitors

Measures of success

  • The number of young people in the project.
  • The number of young people who perform.
  • The quality of performances and the quality of the event itself in terms of how smoothly it runs.
  • The number of young people attending the event.
  • The amount of coverage the event manages to garner.
  • How well the budget is managed – ability to make profit.
  • Feedback from the audience – did they enjoy the event?
  • Does the event grow and develop its own momentum?

  • Keeping a log of young people that apply and attend
  • Feedback at and after the event itself
  • Documentation of the event – film and sound recordings
  • Buzz created around the event through social media
  • Ticket sales and final budget
