STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

YRBS DATA REQUEST AND USE AGREEMENT

The following information is provided to individuals and agencies requesting raw data sets collected through the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) in New Hampshire.

The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors priority health-risk behaviors and the prevalence of obesity and asthma among youth and young adults primarily through a biannual national school-based survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state, territorial, tribal, and district surveys conducted by state, territorial, and local education and health agencies and tribal governments. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of priority health-risk behaviors among youth and young adults including behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence; tobacco use; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection; unhealthy dietary behaviors; and physical inactivity. In addition, the YRBSS monitors the prevalence of obesity and asthma.[1]

There are two distinct sets of YRBS data in New Hampshire:

1)The state sample of NH high school classrooms collected at the request of the CDC; and

2)The local sample of NH high schools who volunteer to participate in the survey and offer the opportunity to all students in the school.

STATE SAMPLE DATA

State sample data are available for the following years: 1993, 1995, 2003, 2005 2007 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017through the NH Department of Education YRBS Coordinator listed below or from CDC- DASH at

At present, data from the local sample YRBS administration are not weighted. Therefore, data used from these data sets should denote that they are only representative of the youth who completed the survey. Extrapolating rates of use and perceptions to any other population or compared to any other population is problematic.

Important qualifications of raw data release:

1)Data users must not use data in such manner that individuals are or could be identified; and

2)Data users must ensure accurate representation of the limitations of data (e.g., when representing data trends, noting significant fluctuations in sample size that may affect rate stability).

In signing this use document and/or by receiving raw data from the NH Department of Education and/or the NH Department of Health and Human Services, you and/or the agency or organization you represent agree to follow the recommended data use parameters below:

STATE SAMPLE

▪ Using weighted data is expected. If you are not using weighted data, please inform the NH Department of Education’s YRBS Coordinator. In addition, please print the following notice to this effect on any published material:

“The data used in this study were not weighted and represent only those students who participated in the survey. Inferences should not be made to any non-participating students; the data is not representative of New Hampshire students. Confidence intervals cannot be applied to unweighted data.”

▪ If using weighted data, please agree that this should not be analyzed, reported or presented at a sub-state level (e.g., because of the small sample size, there should be no representation of data at a county, region or school).

LOCAL SAMPLE

 Currently, local sample data sets are unweighted and therefore should be cited as only representative of the survey

respondents and not representative of any larger population;

 Raw data at the school level will be stripped of the following: age, gender, town, height, weight, race and ethnicity;

 No data from a cell size of less than 60 should be used as it is inherently unreliable.

Please complete the information fields below relative to your data request and submit to the respective data stewards:
