Youth Adventure Daily Schedule and Activities 2012

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS SCHEDULE IS TENATIVE AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. WEATHER AND OTHER FACTORS MAY DICTATE CHANGES. I’M SENDING YOU THIS IN ORDER FOR YOU TO HAVE A GENERAL IDEA OF WHAT WE WILL BE DOING. REMEMBER, YOU HAVE WEEKS OF SCHOOL LEFT – DON’T IGNORE THE BOOKS.

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Youth arrive at either Billings or Fort Smith and check into lodging locations by approximately 4:00pm. It is a two hour drive from Billings to Fort Smith. You will have time to settle in, get unpacked, organize and get ready for a busy stay in the Big Horn Valley.

At 6:00pm we will have a Community Picnic and get acquainted activity.

At the picnic we will meet everyone, get some instructions on how we will do things and have a casting session.

Bring your fly rods and a 9’ 3X or 4X leader if you have one.

The casting session will be held to make sure you all are able to cast the big long open loop necessary to cast a 9’ leader, a thingamabobber, and two flies with weight… Casting instructors will be there to help you become comfortable with the rig. This will be a good time to hone general casting skills as we will have several very talented instructors.

In general it will be a short, fun casting lesson but we will stay as long as it takes to get everyone feeling comfortable with the casting. Our goal for the next 4 days is to have you all CATCH FISH and catch them on the flies you tie each morning. I will send a general list of some of the flies we will be using and tying at a later date.

Wednesday, June 20, 2012 (and rather typical of the next four days)

700am: Youths will be picked up at lodging and taken to Big Horn Trout Shop for breakfast and fly tying session. You must bring your fly tying tools and fishing tackle and everything you will need for the day. You will not return to your place of lodging until 9:00pm or later.

8:00 till 10:00am: Fly tying class at Big Horn Trout Shop. Frank as well as others will conduct the tying classes. (Frank has tied professionally for 50 years and taught tying for 40. He is a recipient of the FFF Buz Buszek Memorial Fly Tying Award and the FFF Dick Nelson Fly Tying Teaching Award. The others who assist with the tying are all experienced professional tiers and teachers. You will leave your tying tools in our tying room and not have to carry them back and forth each day. Later you will be sent a list of the types of flies we will be tying and you will be offered a fly tying challenge (but more on that later).

10:00am: Guides are waiting to take you fishing. You will meet them at the Trout Shop. There you will gear up, wader up, and head out for the river. You will have a different guide each day in order to learn different approaches and techniques for the trout. Our guides for 2010 had a combined total of over 300 years experience as professional, full time fly fishing guides. You will be guided by the best in the West. You will fish with a different boat mate each day.

1:00pm: Lunch on the river. Guides will have the lunches

4:00 to 5:00: Take out from the river and go to Big Horn Lake for evening activities.

Dinner will be provided on the lake or some other place between the river and the lake.

At the lake the youths will participate in a mini carp/small mouth bass fishing tourney, learn to row a drift boat and finish the day with a short drift boat race on the lake.

9:00pm: Return to lodging and hit the sack.
