Your task is to create a canvas that visually represents the characters of Shakespeare’s HAMLET and their relationships with each other.

You will receive the following items as resources for this task and you may use only these:

  • your canvas –one piece of A3 paper
  • a variety of coloured cards with which to represent the main characters.

You can use scissors and glue. Thereis to be no writing on the canvas.

In the construction of your canvas, you are able to control and manipulate the following factors:

  • WHICH characters you believe are important enough to include
  • the SHAPESyou choose to represent these characters – do the shapes have any meaning?
  • the SIZEyou allocate to the shapes – this could vary with the characters’ power and importance
  • the COLOURyou use to represent the characters – think of connotations here
  • the POSITION of the characters:
  • on the canvas itself – is the character central or on the margin?
  • in relation to other characters – the physical distance on the page could reflect the psychological or emotional distance between the characters.

Think carefully about the above factors, as your canvas will form the basis of an oral piece during which you will present your canvas and explain, with examples from the play, why you made the choices and decisions you did while constructing your canvas.
