YOUNG MUSICIANS TEAM UP WITH DANCERS FOR HAZLITT SHOW

Young Kent musicians worked with contemporary dancers over four days to create a show of original music and movement, staged for friends and family at a professional theatre.

Orchestra ONE workshops encourage young people of all abilities, playing a variety of instruments, to devise and perform their own original music. As an added challenge, some of the students at Project 13 collaborated with dancers from the Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company on a new piece combining music and movement.

Rehearsals were held during the school holidays at the Cornwallis Academy, Maidstone, over four days with a free concert at the Hazlitt Theatre in Maidstone on the evening of the final day.

The musical ensembles were led by Ayanna Witter-Johnson and Bracken Burns while the choreographer was Vinicius Salles from Ashford’s Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company.

Run by Kent Music, Orchestra ONE is free to join and open to young people aged 8 to 18 from across Kent. All musical styles, instruments and levels of ability are welcome and workshops are free with no audition necessary. Participants are coached by professional creative music tutors and encouraged to improvise and contribute their own musical ideas, as well as enjoying the opportunity to experience playing as an orchestra.

The next Orchestra ONE course runs from Tuesday 2 to Friday 5 August.
