Young Leader and Local Organization Nomination Form– 2018

Coaches Across Continents is delighted to partner with Olympic Gold Medalist, Michael Johnson on his Young Leader course.

We would like to offer your organization the opportunity to nominate one male and one female for the life changing 2018 program.

Applications are due by January 8th, 2018.

OVERVIEW

The Michael Johnson Young Leader course provides life-changing opportunities to young people around the world in sport, education and community leadership, providing the training, resources and support that they would not otherwise have, guiding them to a successful future.

Each year, the course calls for nominations from a select group of Program Partners to identify potential Young Leaders. These young people must have a passion for sport, the desire to attain academic achievement, and the commitment to become a leader through sport in their community. Nominations are submitted to an expert panel, which identifies the final group.

Selected community leaders will be supported with a one-week trip to Dallas, Texas, USA as well as ayear-round Support for Success package to continue their academic, athletic, and social program over the following 12-months.

The 3 Phases:

Selected Young Leaders commit to fulfilling and taking full advantage of all four phases of the program:
Phase 1 – Opportunity of a lifetime: 7-day course at the cutting-edge Michael Johnson Performance Center in Dallas Texas that focuses on sport, education and community leadership
Phase 2 – Development of potential: A bespoke Support for Success twelve-month package mapped out in Phase 1 which includes tools and opportunities tailored to help them achieve their goals across the three key pillars of the program: sport, leadership and community.

Phase 3 – Ongoing engagement. The young leaders, supported by the nominating organization, will be expected to follow a track toward leadership, developed during the Dallas course, and report back to the course periodically on their success.

Criteria

Criteria 1. Opportunity

This program is specifically geared towards those who would not otherwise have the opportunity to access this type of support and resource:

  • Must be 18-23 years old (the next generation of leaders)
  • Have a disadvantaged background, and/or
  • Have been marginalized by society in the most extreme sense
  • From all regions in the world, but must show how and why specifically this program can provide better opportunity in that place that the participant would not otherwise have
  • Must be available to attend and travel to the one-week course in Dallas.

Criteria 2. Sport

Young Leaders must have a commitment and a passion for sport, whether it be on the field, as a potential career, or as a way for them to engage their community.

Criteria 3. Leadership

Young Leaders must show existing leadership qualities as well as be deemed by their nominating organization as a potential future leader

Criteria 4. Community

Young Leaders must have a commitment to their own community and have shown ways that they have used sport to contribute to the improvement of their surroundings. During the program, they are supported in a project they have identified that addresses a need in their community, and they must show how they will succeed in implementing this over the year.

Criteria 5. Voice

This program aims to have impact beyond the one-week course, and beyond the one year of support. Participants are expected and supported in sharing their story and continuing to work and lead in the world of sport after completing the program.

PHASE I. EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME – One week course in Dallas

Once selected, Michael Johnson Young Leaders spend a week at the Michael Johnson Performance Center in Dallas, Texas. Here they are exposed to the environment of a world class sporting institution while receiving training and education, as well as steering on how to develop and maintain a career in sport. This includes exploratory education in leadership, life-skills, cultural and community engagement.

Each element of the course, whether it be about sport, leadership or community, are interconnected in their learnings and development.Each session during the course will link directly to an objective through a leadership, community or sport context. They are achieved through various exciting, thought-provoking and engaging sessions that range from classroom-based leadership learning to showcasing games used in their own communities to working together to run programs for local schoolkids to goal-setting and reflection.

At the end of the week, they each have a one-to-one planning session on how they can put what they have learned into practice, ensuring they leave Michael Johnson Performance Center with a clear path to success.

PHASES II. SUPPORT FOR SUCCESS – One-year package

After the Young Leaders attend the weeklong course at Michael Johnson Performance Center in Dallas, they return to their community and enter into Phase III of the program entitled ‘Support for Success’. They each receive a year-long support package, which includes tools and opportunities tailored to help them achieve their goals across the three key pillars of the program: sport, leadership and community. It also includes opportunities for network and profile building. Each Young Leader’s package is different, tailored to their goals and needs. It is jointly developed between partners and Michael Johnson himself after careful analysis of goals and the Support for Success package assets.

The Support for Success package could include the following:

  • Remote sport training and coach education
  • Advice on diet and nutrition
  • Advice on sport-based goal-setting
  • Support on sport-based skill-building

Leadership

  • Leadership development tools
  • Networks
  • Career development support
  • Mentoring and Motivation support

Community

  • Planning support for developing community project
  • Skills and coaching tools
  • Stipends for delivering community project (case by case)
