Young ICT Leaders’ Forum 2016 (YILF-2016)

Application Form

Application Criteria:
1)  Applicant is in the age group of between 18 and 35 years old. Applicant from government sector, industry and private sector, academia and R&D organizations are welcomed.
2)  Applicant should be in charge of and/or have professional background in Internet of Things (IoT), Smart City or modern ICT convergence (e.g. cloud, big data, etc.). In this regard, application form must be fully completed and attached with his/her Resume/CV.
3)  Applicant must be actively and fully participate in the ‘Busan Global Smart Cities Challenge’ which is part of the 2nd Young ICT Leaders’ Forum. Hence, applicant must complete the application form including his/her proposed innovative idea for competition of the Busan Global Smart Cities Challenge.
4)  Successful applicants will be selected based on their experience and importantly their ideas proposed for the competition of the Busan Global Smart Cities Challenge.
5)  Applicant may apply as a team, and only one application form is required. However, it is important to note that, if the applicant is selected, air ticket and hotel accommodation will be provided to only one person of the team.
6)  The selection committee reserves the right to accept or reject any applications subject to applicants’ qualifications and available budget.
7)  The Forum also welcomes any individuals or groups who wish to attend the Forum on their own expenses, or are financially supported by their organization. However, they are also required to submit the completed application form and resume.
8)  Application form must be signed by the applicant and approved (signed by) by his/her supervisor.
Fellowship Provisions:
·  Eligible countries for fellowships include Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Developing Countries including Small Islands Developing States (SIDS).

Flight Ticket / Round-trip flight ticket between major airport of the applicant’s country and Gimhae International Airport, Busan, Korea (Economy class) / The secretariat will coordinate the flight ticket unless otherwise agreed by the secretariat

(From 6th to 9th Sept. / check-out in 10th Sept. morning) / The secretariat will designate the official hotel of the forum.

BUSAN GLOBAL SMART CITIES CHALLENGE
Part of the 2nd Young ICT Leaders’ Forum 2016

Background

Since when Busan Metropolitan City established U-City plan in 2005, Busan City has formulated a Smart City Plan, ‘Global ICT Hub based on Internet of Things (IoT)’, which aims to provide a place for trials and competitions of IoT technologies. Busan City signed the MoU with SKT and Cisco systems for fostering test-bed site of IoT Based Smart City at Haeundae in Busan city and is spurring to establish world reference global smart city. This plan is set to:

a) foster test-bed site in Haeundae district,

b) introduce smart city services to resolve various urban city problems,

c) promote of Internet of Things (IoT) industry, and

d) providing new experience of urban management services to Busan citizen.

Busan Global Smart Cities Challenge

The ‘Busan Global Smart Cities Challenge’ is part of the 2nd Young ICT Leaders’ Forum 2016. It is a competition open to young people to present their innovative ideas on harnessing the power of digital technologies in making a city smarter, safer, and friendlier to the environment, thereby improving the quality of life of the citizens.

Competing ideas could be focused on, but not limited to: improving the management of urban flows and the transactional relationships with its citizens; climate change; disaster prevention; economic restructuring; the move to online retail and entertainment; addressing the problems of an ageing population; urban population; public transportation; citizen safety; or the pressures on public finances.

Five winners will be selected based on their outstanding and feasible ideas and will be awarded a round-trip air ticket (economy class) and hotel accommodation to participate in the ITU Telecom World 2016 which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand during 14 – 17 November 2016.

Operation

Based on your concept notes with regard to ‘GLBOAL SMART CITIES CHALLENGE’, every participant needs to present their ideas on day 1 of the forum i.e. 7th September 2016. Judges will evaluate and select the 10 most outstanding ideas, and those chosen ideas will be developed further through group work on the following day, 8th September 2016.

Based on the chosen 10 innovative ideas, every participant will be put into a group (max. 10 groups) according to their interests, where group discussion will help to develop the idea further. At the end of the day, the 10 innovators will present their respective ideas and concepts in detail. Five winners will be selected for their most innovative ideas and will be awarded by the Forum Secretariat.

1)  Day 1, Wednesday, 7 September 2016

  1. Presentation: Idea presentation (5 mins) + Q&A from judges (2 mins)
  2. Selection: 10 outstanding ideas will be chosen by the judges and those will be developed further by group activity.

2)  Day 2, Thursday, 8 September 2016

  1. Group Work: Every participant will be placed into a group according to their interests. Each group will be led by those participants who presented the 10 most outstanding ideas and will have a mentor based upon their expertise.
  2. Final Presentation: After group discussion, each participant will present the final concept of their idea (10 mins) followed by a Q&A (2 mins) from the judges and audience.
  3. Award: Based on the evaluation of the judges, the forum secretariat will present awards to the 5 most innovative ideas.
