Book Soundtrack

You will create a soundtrack to the book, Monster.

Just about every movie these days has a soundtrack that is marketed along with the movie. The songs on the soundtrack use music and rhythm to set the scene and sometimes tell about characters form the movie.

Books should come with soundtracks too. Readers could listen to the soundtracks while they read the book. In fact, if you have ever listened to a book-on-tape, they are sometimes produced with background music to set the mood of a scene or to build suspense.

It needs to include 10 songs. They need to be APPROPRIATE for school!!!

Here’s the breakdown of the tracks:

Track 1: pg. 1-24

Track 2: pg. 24-44

Track 3: pg. 45-75

Track 4: pg. 75-121

Track 5: pg. 122-160

Track 6: pg. 161-200

Track 7: pg. 201-235

Track 8: pg. 236-262

Track 9: pg. 263-end

Track 10: A song you thought was fitting somewhere that you couldn’t fit in elsewhere… or maybe you want to have an opening song… or a closing song… You pick.

I’m not going to require you to make a CD, however, if you do, you will receive five extra credit points.

Type:

  • The name of the song on one line
  • The pages it goes with
  • At least 3 lines of lyrics in quotation marks on the next line
  • I want you to put the section of the song that explains best why you chose that song
  • A 3 sentence explanation as to why you chose that song and what’s going on in the book where you would “play” that song in the background?
  • The CD should have a cover with it with helpful and appropriate artwork that identifies the book, author, date, and you, as the creative genius (as any soundtrack would have).

I expect your sentences to be 8th grade sentences.

Example:

“Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger

Stand a little taller

Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone

What doesn’t kill you makes you a fighter…”

I chose this song for my book Hunger Games. This song could be played right after Katniss says good-bye to her family before she leaves for the Hunger Games. It’s fitting because if she lives through the Hunger Games (which we know she does), she’s only going to be a stronger person because of it. This song talks about how standing on your own makes you a stronger person and during the Hunger Games she is all by herself… doing everything she can to stay alive.
