Mind Map for Emotional Factors

Command Words Glossary

You should look at your data collection results from the previous unit.

This will help with the section below.

Evaluation

“Make a judgment on what has happened”

  • Is it a strength or a weakness?
  • Does this affect your performance positively or negatively? (team / opponent / yourself)
  • Did it impact on you a lot or not really?
  • Are there any statistics you can add? (GOB?)

Task: Can you evaluate3 skills from your GOB in Unit 1

Complete Homework 1 (See at Back)

Congratulations you have just completed your first Standardised test!!!

Standardised Tests

What is a Standardised Test?

A Standardised test is an examination that is administered and scored in a consistent or “standard manner”.

How do I know if it’s a Standardised Test?

For a test to be standardised it must be:-

  • Tests are widely recognised
  • Norms (average results) are established
  • Provides a permanent record, therefore can be repeated and compared
  • Easy to compare to an elite performer
  • Results arenon-biased (honest)
  • Test can easily be re-created and performed under the same conditions

Based on the SCAT test above can you explain why it is;

Emotional – Anger

Definition:

The ability for a player to be able to harness their raw emotion and prevent it from impacting on their performance negatively.

Examples of anger in games:

  • Committing fouls / getting sent off.
  • Arguing with team mates/coach/officials.
  • Not focusing on technique/position/opposition

Example: I started to take on too many players with the ball and lost possession. This meant my team had to work harder to get the ball back.

Provide examples from an activity where anger has negatively impacted on your performance

Principles of training

Training should be matched to an individual's needs

By using the principles of training we canplan a personal training programme to improve:

  • Game ability (Mental/Emotional/Social factors)
  • Skill
  • Physical fitness.

The best training programmes are built on principles of specificity, overload, progression, reversibility and tedium. Or…

S.P.O.R.T

Specificity – training must be matched to the needs of the sporting activity.

Progression – start slowly and gradually increase the amount of exercise and keep increasing the difficulty.

Overload - fitness can only be improved by training more than you normally do. You must work hard.

Reversibility –improvements will reverse if you stop training. If you take a break or don’t train often enough you will lose fitness.

Tedium – training must be motivational and not boring. This will ensure you will stick to the program and not give up

Managing Emotions during Performance

A method used to manage emotions during a competitive game is:

Mental Rehearsal.

Mental Rehearsal can be broken down into different stages.

Stage 1: Deep Breathing – Slow intakes of air into the body to reduce Heart rate and provide the brain with oxygen.

“Andy Murray using deep breathing after hitting the ball out of court during a long rally.”
Can you think of a situation within a game where you would use deep breathing to have a positive impact your performance?

______

______

Stage 2: Visualisation – Creating an image in your head of the best scenario possible before you perform.

“Johnnie Wilkinson picturing the ball going through the posts.”
Can you think of a situation within a game where you would use Visualisation to have a positive impact your performance?

______

______

Stage 3: Buzzwords – Using trigger words to help reinforce good technique.

The player (pictured) can use Buzzwords to remind himself of good technique during performance.

“Width” – Provide a stable base

“Platform” – Keep straight arms

Can you create two buzzwords you would use in your performance and link two why they would be helpful?

Activity: ______Skill: ______

Buzzwords (Trigger Words) / What it would help?
1)
2)

What stage do you find most helpful? ______

Can you evaluate the impact that this stage had on your performance?
