Welcome to French class. You are in room 701 and Mrs. Daphne Hrib is your teacher. In a few moments, you will have Mrs. Hrib come in and discuss some things with you about French class.

You need to do the following:

Sit in your assigned desk.

Please listen quietly without reacting out loud. (That means without making comments, laughing, making noises, talking about your opinions, etc.)

Please use the blank paper for any questions, comments or concerns you want to share with Mrs. Hrib. Write these things down and leave the paper on your desk as you leave.

Please raise your hand if you have questions that need to be asked or comments that need to be shared immediately. You may not leave the classroom to use the restroom or get water for the first ten minutes of class. Please do not ask.

Have your agenda on your desk turned to the behavior card page. Make sure your name is written on the top of the card. You will need to make this a habit and plan to do this every day.

Please read the board for any information you may need to know.

Sit and wait quietly for Mrs. Hrib to come in, you may talk at a moderate level. This means no yelling or screaming. If Mrs .Hrib comes to the door and flashes the lights on and off, you are too loud. You will at that point need to lower your volume.

Reading comprehension group.

In this class, you will complete many types of activities. The activities will require you to work as individuals, work in groups, and to work with your teacher. Each activity is designed to help you learn the material presented for the week. On the first day of your week, Monday or Tuesday, you will have an introduction to new material. You will have a warm-up based on the new material posted on the board for you to read and complete as you enter the room. You will have 10 minutes to complete the warm-up. You should be in your seat at this time, with your agenda on your desk, reading and working on the assignment. It is during this time that you should sharpen your pencil, if you need to do so. You should be working silently and if you are not, Madame Fernie will let you know by flashing the lights on and off. This is a signal for you to lower the volume. The first time she flickers the lights you should all consider a warning. The second time you will lose a letter on the word on the board.

  1. How should you enter the room?
  1. How many minutes will you have for the opener?
  1. What should be on your desk?
  1. If your pencil needs to be sharpened, when should you do it?
  1. How will you know when if the volume is too loud?
  1. How many warnings will you receive if the volume is too loud? What will the warning be like?
  1. What will the consequence be the second time the lights are flickered?

After the warm-up is complete, Madame Fernie will introduce the lesson. Sometimes, this will be done with a power point. At other times, you might watch a video or listen and respond to a story with pictures. When Mme. Fernie comes in and turns on the light, all noise and movement should stop so the lesson may begin. You will watch and listen quietly. This is the material you are about to use, so it is very important that you pay attention. When the introduction is over, you will begin your group assignments.

  1. How might the lesson be presented?
  1. How should you behave during the lesson presentation>
  1. Should you begin your group assignments during the introduction of the lesson?

There will be three group assignments on this day. Group Bonjour is an individual work station. You will complete work for this time period in the designated area for yourself and by yourself. This group will have the purpose of identifying the new material in some way. This will usually be a reading comprehension, vocabulary identification or grammar focused task. You will have a task with directions to complete. Group Copains is a student-centered group. You will be completing a task at this group with other students. Usually this group will involve a game or a spoken task that will need to be recorded. You will have to do your part along with the other people in your group for a group grade. Remember you must follow directions. Group Ensemble is a teacher led station. Here, you will sit down with the teacher and have a traditional lesson. You will practice saying the new material, listening activities, speaking activities, etc. You may ask questions here with the teacher about any other group you have been involved with.

You will know if is time to move from one group to the other when the teacher turns the lights off and says it is brain break and transition time. You have the time of the brain break to move yourself and your belongings to your new location. At this time, you may take a bathroom break if available, get water, stand up, but the noise must stay at a whisper or below. If you want to go to the bathroom, you must sign out on the clipboard in the front. You have THREE MINUTES to be out of the room, if you go to the bathroom, and only one person can go to the bathroom at a time. If you are too loud Madame Fernie will flash the lights as a warning. If you continue to be loud, the lights will come on, the brain break is over, the noise must stop completely and you must be seated. You will lose a letter on the word of the week as a consequence. If you have not gotten too loud at the end of the brain break, the lights will come on signaling that you need to be seated and start the work at your new group.

If you need to go to the restroom, you must raise your hand. Do not raise your hand during total class instruction time. When given permission to leave you must fill out your name, time, and destination on the sign-out sheet and pass. Restroom breaks and trips to the nurse should happen as needed only. You should not need to go to the nurse every day for ice or a Band-Aid. You should not have to use the restroom everyday either. Those concerns will be discussed with you if they occur and then with your parents if needed.

After you have gone to all three groups, you will complete a closer activity. You will stay in the location of your third group for the closer. The closer is usually some type of ticket out of the door. Any work that you complete and that needs to be turned in at the end of the day will be placed into the white work box. This is located in the front of the room.
