Using the Library website, reference guides, and orientation presentation answer the following questions and submit them to Francis Kuykendall . You may print out the test and turn it in at the Library Circulation desk OR copy and paste it with your answers and email it to within 2 weeks of the orientation date. On the subject line, enter: library test – your name. If you just enter your name, I will probably delete the message without reading it because I don’t open mail from people I don’t know.

You must include where you found the information.

Ex. What do you need to bring to the Library to get a library card? Ans: 1) a photo ID. 2) Library website under Library Info.

2. How did you access the Library website? Give the steps.

3. List the three major headings of the Library website.

4. Click on LINC (library catalog). Using either the Reference Guide or the Help screen, look up the book about shipwrecks. Write the author, title, place of publication, publisher, copyright date, and call number.

5. Return to the LINC catalog homepage and Click on the Databases & Reference button. List the 5 headings on that page.

6. Click on “Login to access databases off-campus”. Follow the instructions to login to databases. What is your Patron id number? What is your PIN?

7. Select one database and complete the following steps:

1. Write the name of the database

2. In the basic search screen, type Iraqi

3. How many “hits” or entries did you find?

4. Return to the search screen and type, Iraqi and politics

5. How many “hits” or entries did you find?

6. Return to the search screen and type, Iraqi and politics and women

7. How many “hits” or entries did you find?

You have just completed a Boolean search. By using AND you narrowed your topic to a manageable number of hits.

8. Select another database and complete another search using three terms of your choice and either OR or NOT. Go through the same steps as in the previous question.

9. Select one database citation and write a MLA formatted citation. You will need to use your handbook.

10. Select one of your search topics and use a search engine to locate links. What search engine did you use and how many hits did you get?

11. Using either the paper or the online Reference Guides as a reference, explain how you determine if and or when a website is appropriate to use for research papers. The online Reference Guides are located on the Library webpage. You will need to find them. This will help you become familiar with the different headings and links.

12. What is a Pathfinder? And when would it be helpful?Where did you get the information for this question?

13. On Library webpage, locate the Map of the Library. Follow the instructions at the top of the map, and list each section and list the information found in each area.

14. Click on Internet Resources. What information will you find? How will the information be helpful?

15. Click on Library Blog. What information is found there?

16. Click on Library Documents. Click on Policies. The SouthArk Library’s Policy Manual gives the Mission, Goals, and guidelines for the library. The rules and regulations of the library are there. For those of you who have insomnia, reading the Manual might help you sleep. However, the second section detailing the actual policies of the Library will be helpful for you to understand the guidelines of the Library. Why do you think the Library would have a Policy Manual?
