Vector Diagram Practice

You must draw diagrams for all problems UNLESS they are only in 2-dimensions.

Use the proper format and solve for the resultant vectors that indicate displacement or velocity. Use a ruler and the given scale.

1) A squirrel scurries 4.7 m north to get a nut that has fallen from a tree. When the wind blows, however, he must make a turn and follow the nut 7.2 m west. After being kicked by a human, the nut changes directions once more and rolls 4.7 m south. The squirrel follows. What is his displacement? (Use scale 1m = 1cm)

2) David Wright is caught in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd base trying to stretch a double into a triple. First he runs 35 ft south towards 3rd, then 15 ft north towards 2nd, then he turns around and tries for 3rd again by running 22 ft this time south, abruptly stops and runs back to 2nd base 18 ft north. Finally, he makes one more turn around, heads towards, 3rd base, ducks the tag of the third baseman and finishes out by running 38 ft. What was the total distance he ran? What was Wright’s displacement?

3) A boy scout on a camping trip sets out in the woods to find berries and earn his berry merit badge. He starts out going 0.75 km east, finds nothing, hits water, and must turn and go north 0.64 km. He finds the berries!! And a bear!! He runs away from the bear 0.75 km west when he finally loses the scary bear. 2 questions: 1 – This boy scout never got his merit badge for orienteering so can you please tell him how to get back to the campsite? And 2 – what is his displacement? (Hint – the answers are different!) Use the scale 0.1km = 1cm

4) A baby drops his toy ball while seated on a moving train. The train is moving 34 km/hr southeast and when he drops the ball it starts rolling forward towards the front of the train at a speed of 4.5 km/hr. What is the resultant velocity of the ball?
