Walking Boots must give good support to the foot and ankle. They should have a tread pattern to avoid slipping. Timberland style or work wear boots are not suitable.

Gloves are needed for warmth, but also cycling.

Daysack should be large enough to take a waterproof, spare fleece, lunch, drink and any group equipment – preferably around 35 litres

Large Rucksack – Scouts 55 litres +, Explorers 65 litres +

Painkillers - You may bring 4 painkillers e.g. Ibuprofen, in your personal first aid kit for use, if required, when you’re out on activities.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THESE WITHOUT TELLING A LEADER FIRST

Rucksack Liners – Ordinary bin bags are not suitable as they are too thin and rip too easily. Liners are available for 50p each

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL OF YOUR KIT IS NAMED -Muddy / dirty kit all looks the same. Everyone has a Scout shirt & trouser, hats, gloves, socks and underwear and they never belong to anyone!!

Please pack your bag yourself – don’t let your mum or dad do it as they won’t be there when you pack to come home. A separate dirty bag or holdall to keep the clean and dirty separate is a good idea.

If you pack your kit into your rucksack then please bring additional bags to keep kit in whilst you are using it on activities, a suit case or holdall is the most suitable container as it will fit under the beds, and is easier to manage.

Supplying yourself with this kit doesn’t have to be expensive. There are opportunities to borrow or hire kit at minimal or no cost. (Countryside Ski and Climb in Stevenage Old Town have boot “hire” for a deposit, and Friends and Family often have suitable kit to borrow)

If you choose to buy new equipment it is worth planning for the future, and considering potential use. Peak Assault is and example of a county navigation competition with a very rigorous kit check and stringent kit list and it might be sensible to equip yourself to this standard if you plan on taking part. The kit list is available here:

Suppliers include Countryside Ski and Climb, Millets, Blacks, Cotswold Outdoor, Go Outdoors, as well as online or indeed the scout shop.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact the leadership team.
