Jack Hledik Memorial Scholarship Now Open

The Jacobs Naval Systems Group Jack Hledik Memorial Scholarships have been established to recognize and reward students in the top tier of their class. They are students who embody Naval Systems Group’s commitment to education. A $1000.00 scholarship will be awarded in the Ridgecrest, California area and a $1000.00 scholarship will be awarded in the Ventura County, California area.

We have named this scholarship after Jack Hledik to honor the work he did for the Navy and Naval Systems Group. Mr. Hledik was the lead systems engineer for the Sparrow and Sea Sparrow weapons systems during their development at China Lake, California. He was also a valuable team member for the early development of the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM). After retiring from Navy civil service, Mr. Hledik joined Jacobs Naval Systems Group to continue his systems engineering support of the ESSM system.

Qualification Requirements

Students applying for the scholarships must meet the following qualifications stated below. All information will be kept in strict confidence.

Students should:

  • Be pursuing a degree in a field of engineering, mathematics, physics or a science field that is related to an engineering discipline,
  • Have been named or enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university for the school year following the application deadline,
  • Have achieved one or more of the following academic standards: a minimum academic weighted 3.25 GPA, or composite score of 25 (of 36) on the ACT, or a score of 1150 (of 1600) on the SAT,
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America,
  • Have submitted an application; an essay paper answering a chosen question from a pool of four; an activities resume that defines school and community activities, achievements, and leadership skills; a letter of reference; a school transcript, and the student’s SAT/ACT scores. These items should be submitted via email to no later than Thursday, May 1, 2014. Letters must be postmarked by May 1, 2014; 5:00 PM Pacific Time or to the Jacobs Technology Naval Systems Group, 1550 North Norma, Ridgecrest, CA 93555; attention Rich Christensen. Letters must be postmarked by May 1, 2014. If you are electronically submitting your application, all attachments must be in Microsoft Office or Adobe Acrobat PDF formats. Students found to be qualified will be invited to interview with a committee of Jacobs Naval Systems Group employees. Awardees will be notified of the scholarship award by mail. The scholarship will be presented and paid to the student at the Jacobs NSG offices.
