THE LIGHTHOUSE
Newsletter for April 2016
You are my lamp, O LORD; the LORD turns my darkness into light.
2 Samuel 22:29
Message from Our Pastor
Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
As I sit in my office writing this, it’s Holy Week which is always an exciting time of the year for me, and it’s spring. Well kind of, after two weeks of no snow on the ground with the exception of the remnants of a very large pile next to the parsonage driveway it has been that glorious spring brown. This morning the only places where there is no snow is on the roads and sidewalks, but that will probably change because according to the national weather service another possible 12 inches are on its way today!
Now you might be thinking “Pastor we told you winter is long in the Great UP” and I never doubted you one bit, because I have faith that what we will be getting won’t last forever, and soon that lovely spring brown will be back again. This all reminds me of one thing, when it comes to our struggles and pains in life those too will not last forever because of God’s promise through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. There may be times in our lives where that might be challenged because we feel our prayers are not being answered, I know there have been times in my life when I have felt the very same thing yet through the Holy Spirit something or someone steered me back in the right direction and showed me God is always with me, even in my time of doubt and pain. It always seemed to be in the smallest of things, a loving smile, a warm welcome or the kind act of someone who just noticed there was something that was causing me pain. Then there is that lovely brown of spring which always seems to appear year in and year out even when the snow seems it will never go away. That’s where I find hope, the hope that is in the promise of Jesus Christ who bore all of our sin and pain and has given us eternal life.
That also rings true with our community of faith, many churches all over the world are experiencing declining attendance, many churches are in fear that soon they will be no longer able to keep the doors open, that the church they love so much is going to die. But let’s not forget we are the body of Christ, and Christ is eternal so how can we really die? Yes we may change some, but Christ gave us victory over death and through that victory we have hope.
I encourage you as we venture into spring, and all around us there is renewal of life that comes with spring, let’s take a deeper look at the renewal of our community of faith. When we see someone who has not been around for a while welcome them back, just a simple “we miss you at church”, then allow the Holy Spirit to do the rest. The same goes for those who may never stepped through the door of a church, welcome them too. Be a witness to them that we really mean what we say that all are welcome. That is what is going on in places around the world where the church is growing in leaps and bounds, it all begins with a simple “Welcome” and the Holy Spirit leads them to the promise that we find when we worship together as a community of faith. Now it may not happen right away, God’s time is different from ours, but God is always present walking with us and working through us. Thanks Be To God!!
Blessings to you in the days ahead as we “Welcome, Witness and Worship” to the world around us.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor David
