TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Introduction
Tell a story (e.g. Goldilocks and the Three Bears) and then discuss character’s behaviour- e.g. Goldilocks touched other people’s things.
Could use drama and ask small groups to act out a traditional story scene involving habits or could watch a cartoon clip.
MAIN TEACHING AND LEARNING
Activity 1 – Whole class
What do we mean by a bad habit? (a poor choice behaviour that re-occurs). Elicit ideas i.e. biting nails, forgetting to clean teeth, watching too much telly, eating too many sugary foods ……
Own thoughts - have you got a habit you would like to change?
Activity 2
Split into groups of four/five. Each group to choose a “bad habit” e.g. nail biting and invent a character that does this. Make a list of ideas with your group. Draw a picture of your character and put the best ideas on it.
·  What could the person do to change their ways?
·  What can they do if they are tempted to go back to their habit?
·  Who and/or what will help them keep going when it gets tricky? ( We call this persevering)
Then share ideas with another group. Review selection of good ideas and collate these as a class with teacher as scribe.
DIFFERENTIATION
Mixed ability pairings and groups.
PLENARY
Do we have a choice about how we behave? Can we change our bad habits easily? Who can help us make changes? (e.g. friends and family could praise/support us).
KEY QUESTIONS
1.  Why is it difficult to give up an old habit?
