Collect 131

Contemporary

Almighty and eternal God,

you have kindled the flame of love

in the hearts of the saints:

grant to us the same faith and power of love,

that, as we rejoice in their triumphs,

we may be sustained by their example and fellowship;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

grant this for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

to whom with you and the Holy Spirit,

be the kingdom, the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Post Communion Prayer 132

Lord of heaven,

in this Eucharist you have brought us near

to an innumerable company of angels

and to the spirits of the just made perfect:

as in this food of our earthly pilgrimage

we have shared their fellowship,

so may we come to share their joy in heaven;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Micah 3. 5-12

Thus says the Lord concerning theprophets who lead my people astray, who cry ‘Peace’ when they have something to eat, but declare war against those who put nothing into their mouths. Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision and darkness to you, without revelation. The sun shall go down upon theprophets, and the day shall be black overthem; the seers shall be disgraced, and the diviners put to shame; they shall all cover their lips, for there is no answer from God. But as for me, I am filled withpower, with the spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.

Hear this, you rulers of the house of Jacob and chiefs of the house of Israel, who abhor justice and pervert all equity, who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with wrong! Its rulers give judgement for a bribe, its priests teach for a price, its prophets give oracles formoney; yet they lean upon the Lord andsay, ‘Surely the Lord is with us! No harm shall come upon us.’ Therefore because of you Zion shall be ploughed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap ofruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height.

Psalm 43 or 107. 1-8

Biblical text

Psalm 43

Vindicate me, OGod, and defend my cause against an ungodly people; from those who are deceitful and unjust deliver me! For you are the God in whom I take refuge; why have you cast me off? Why must I walk about mournfully because of the oppression of the enemy?

Osend out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and I will praise you with the harp, OGod, my God.

Why are you cast down, Omy soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.

Psalm 107. 1-8

Ogive thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures for ever. Let the redeemed of the Lord sayso, those he redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to an inhabited town; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress; he led them by a straight way, until they reached an inhabited town. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.

Psalm 43 or 107. 1-8

Pointed Psalm

Psalm 43

Give judgement for me, O God,

and defend my cause against an un/godly / people :

deliver me from the de/ceitful / and the / wicked.

For you are the God of my refuge;

why have you / cast me / from you :

and why go I so heavily, / while the / enemy op/presses me?

O send out your light and your truth,

that / they may / lead me :

and bring me to your holy / hill and / to your / dwelling,

That I may go to the altar of God,

to the God of my / joy and / gladness :

and on the lyre I will give thanks to / you, O / God my / God.

Why are you so full of heaviness, / O my / soul :

and why are you / so dis/quieted with/in me?

O put your / trust in / God :

for I will yet give him thanks,

who is the help of my / countenance, / and my / God.

Psalm 107. 1-8

O give thanks to the Lord, for / he is / gracious :

for his steadfast / love en/dures for / ever.

Let the redeemed of the / Lord / say this :

those he redeemed / from the / hand of the / enemy,

And gathered out of the lands from the east and / from the / west :

from the / north and / from the / south.

Some went astray in / desert / wastes :

and found no / path • to a / city to / dwell in.

Hungry / and / thirsty :

their / soul was / fainting with/in them.

So they cried to the Lord / in their / trouble :

and he delivered / them from / their dis/tress.

He set their feet on the / right / way :

till they / came • to a / city to / dwell in.

Let them give thanks to the Lord / for his / goodness :

and the / wonders he / does • for his / children

1 Thessalonians 2. 9-13

You remember our labour and toil, brothers and sisters; we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how pure, upright, and blameless our conduct was towards you believers. As you know, we dealt with each one of you like a father with his children, urging and encouraging you and pleading that you should lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

We also constantly give thanks to God for this, that when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word but as what it really is, God’s word, which is also at work in you believers.

Matthew 24. 1-14

As Jesus came out of the temple and was going away, his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. Then he asked them, ‘You see all these, do you not? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.’

When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, ‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, “I am the Messiah!” and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: all this is but the beginning of the birth pangs.

‘Then they will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of my name. Then many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold. But anyone who endures to the end will be saved. 14And this good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations; and then the end will come.
