STUDENT LEARNING

This unit focuses on changing environments and changing times. It encourages students to consider how individuals and groups have influenced the future. In English, students are introduced to the features of film texts. They will make judgments and justify opinions about how the qualities of film texts contribute to audience appreciation and enjoyment. In Religious Education, students are introduced to meditation and prayer processes. They will learn about Spiritual Role models from the past and present, in order to gain a sense of their own spirituality. In Social Science, students will investigate the social, economic, political, military and religious aspects of The Age of Chivalry.

By the end of this unit of work, students should be able to:

CONTEXT

Film is a popular text in our modern society. It is often used as a medium to reflect and in some cases challenge our lifestyles, culture, language and values. Directors create their film texts to position their viewers to accept the imaginary world they create through their production.

TASK

A magazine for young teenagers is requesting film reviews from subscribers. You decide to submit a film review for a film of your choice. Your review must contain:

  1. An introduction which includes the title, director, and main actors in the film, as well as an angle or general opinionative comment about the film.
  2. A paragraph which contains a brief plot analysis and speculation on the director’s purpose.
  3. A paragraph which analyses and critiques the narrative techniques of the film, including theme, plot, genre, characters and setting.
  4. A paragraph which analyses and critiques the film techniques used, including camerawork, sound and lighting.
  5. A conclusion which makes comparisons with other films by the same director, or in the same genre, as well as an overall recommendation.

AUDIENCE

Readers of a magazine for young teenagers.

PURPOSE

To inform and persuade/ criticise.

CONDITIONS

Film must be rated M, PG or G (teacher approval required prior to drafting review)

Review must be presented according to magazine layout.

CONTEXT

Spirituality is like an ‘inner knowing’. Many humans, across the world, spend their lives developing this ‘inner knowing’. This term, you have been given the opportunity to investigate a variety of expressions of spirituality in the Christian tradition, and to investigate the spirituality of significant people within and beyond the Christian tradition. The next step is to examine the influences upon your spirituality.

TASK

You are required to write a personal recount which explores your spirituality, and the influences which have shaped this important aspect of your identity.

In your reflection, you may want to focus on a relationship which has been very important in shaping your spiritual self. Alternatively, you may want to focus on an event or memory which has stuck with you, and has changed the way you think and act.

CONTEXT

Medium aevum -- Medieval or The Middle Ages. We think of knights in shining armor, lavish banquets, wandering minstrels, kings, queens, bishops, monks, pilgrims, and glorious pageantry. In film and in literature, medieval life seems heroic, entertaining, and romantic. In reality, life in the Middle Ages, a period that extended from approximately the fifth century to the fifteenth century in Western Europe, was sometimes all these things, as well as harsh, uncertain, and often dangerous.

TASK

Choose from one of the presentation options below:

  1. You are a medieval Baron who is briefing his knights before laying siege to an enemy Baron’s Castle. You will:
  1. Present a plan of the enemy castle.
  2. Outline its weak points.
  3. Describe the siege equipment you will use.
  4. Describe the sequence of attack.
  5. Present contingency plans.
  1. You are a medieval military architect who is presenting a plan for a new castle to his masons. You will describe the features of the castle and their purpose. It will be constructed on either:
  1. A steep hill
  2. A flat plain, or
  3. A river bend
  1. You are a knight who is instructing a group of newly appointed squires on the duties and training every squire will be required to undertake prior to becoming a knight. Your lecture must include:

Step 1 -Define or Deconstruct the Question

  • Underline the key words to identify exactly what you have been asked to do.
  • Identify the task words - things such as genre required, word limit, due date.

Step 2 -Locate Information
