Individual groups present their chosen community’s basic characteristics to the rest of the class.
Invite students to consider their life journey from infancy to present time. Have students imagine walking through a creek with various stepping-stones as significant steps or markers of life incidents.
Throughout the journey, have students consider:
– important or significant events and/or experiences
– significant challenges and hard times
– times of success, achievement, happiness and fun (memorable events).
For each of the above, have students outline the people who have also been present and who have had a significant impact upon their life.
Encourage students to use different colours that might help capture the mood or energy in the particular remembered situation. Offer a chance for sharing what has been thought and illustrated. / Come Follow Me

3 / Chapter Two: Students understand that Parish and the Catholic school are Church communities
Teachers provide students with copies of the CATHOLIC CHURCH section in the Business Listings of the White Pages. Students to count the number of parishes listed and the number of Catholic Schools, both primary and secondary.
This task will help students to understand that that each Catholic school is a Church community. (Teachers should point out to students that almost all Catholic primary schools are part of a parish community which is why they have the same name eg. Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School. By contrast, Catholic secondary schools are generally not as closely associated with one parish community. They will have ties with a number of parishes).
Students read passage and outline how the parish & school reflects community characteristics.
Get Father Daniel or Father Richard in to speak to students about the ways his parish reflects the characteristics of community, identified in the Student Resource.
Students are required to create an advertisement for the Broome parish in the hope that it will attract more members of the local community.
Why do people still sometimes feel isolated in a community/fail to accept community responsibilities? (pg 21)

10 / Summary of Unit 8.1
Review of Unit Students revise the key learning points of the Unit

Semester One Assessment

OUTCOME ONE: Students understand that people come to discover God through Creations.

OUTCOME FOCUS

DG 2.2: Students understand that people belong to groups called communities. They identify the communities to which they belong and how these communities reflect God’s love and goodness.

DG 3.2: Students explore the lives of people who use their gifts to demonstrate how to live in a way that reflects God. They are aware of linkages between living in a way that reflects God and meeting the needs of others in communities.

DG 4.2: Students recognise common questions and yearnings that people have as a result of human and natural interactions. In doing so they are able to make simple generalisations about the search for meaning that is common amongst people. Students explore how different questions and yearnings point to people’s desire to change the world so that it reflects the goodness of God.

OUTCOME FIVE: Students demonstrate the skills necessary in order to read and apply Scripture to life and to participate in Catholic ritual and prayer.

OUTCOME FOCUS

CP 2.1: Students identify examples of what it means to live as a Christian. They recognise the importance of learning from the Gospels about how Jesus lived his life. They provide examples of how people can demonstrate that they are following the example of Jesus.

CP 3.1: Students identify and discuss some relationships between the stories and events in the Bible and how people today are called to live their lives. Students explain simple symbolic meanings and identify language structures and conventions characteristic of the Bible.

CP 4.1: Students select, use and reflect on different scriptural texts to generalise about the links between these texts and the lessons they teach about how Christians today can live their lives.
