ANCIENT EGYPT

Year 3 – Mrs LeGrice and Mrs Roe

Dear parents and carers,

Our main topic area this term is the ‘Ancient Egyptians’ and most of our other subject areas will be based around this topic. We hope this leaflet is useful to show you what your children will be learning in school and the kinds of activities you could do at home to support their learning. Homework will be a project linked to our topic – researching an Ancient Egyptian god or goddess. Please listen to your child read every day at home, making sure Reading Records are completed and returned to school daily. Practising times tables and number bonds to 10, 20 and 100 would also be very beneficial.

Literacy
This half term we will be using an adventure text based around Jack Stalwart going to rescue his brother from ancient Egypt. Jack will come across many problems on the way. Watch out for the mummies! The children will be writing character and setting descriptions.
In year 3 we are trying to develop ‘writing stamina.’ At home you could give your child time to write at length and encourage them to retell their reading books in their own words. Focus on basic skills: punctuation, handwriting and spelling. / Numeracy
This term we will be continuing our work on fractions (especially focusing on equivalent fractions), moving on to study shape and then learning about money and measures, including length, mass (weight) and capacity.
We will solve problems in different contexts, both mentally and written.
At home, you could ask questions about coins and change when you are out shopping, and talk about distances and weights in everyday life. Always practise times tables and number bonds.
PE
This term, we shall be working alongside QEGS with their dance department. This will lead to the children performing to others at a dance festival at QEGS in March. / Topic
In our afternoon lessons the children will learn about Ancient Egyptian society, religion and every day life using photographic evidence.
The children will understand when ancient Egypt occurred in history. We will look at hieroglyphics and will also look at how and why the Egyptians mummified their dead. The children will have the opportunity to follow the mummification rituals themselves!!
We will also learn about the famous Egyptian gods and goddesses.
