Transformation – Othello and ‘O’

Visual Representation Task

Task Requirements:

A)  Visual 10%: You are to create a visual representation that demonstrates your understanding of the transformation of the Shakespearean text Othello to the contemporary film ‘O’. Your representation should illustrate how context has shaped both texts looking at plot, setting, characters, theme and style. Examples of representations could be a model, poster, video performance, power point presentation, computer generated cartoon/story, web page/site etc.

B)  Written 5%: You are to submit a 300 word written explanation with your visual representation outlining how you have represented the transformation between the texts. In this explanation you should detail the significance of all component parts of the representation such as use of: colour, symbolism, placement, font, size etc.

C)  Oral 5%: You are to present a brief oral overview (1-2 minutes) of your visual representation to your class. Please note this does not mean reading your explanation to the group but is an actual speech.

Outcomes to Be Assessed:

A student:

1. Demonstrates an understanding of the relationships between composer, responder, text and context.

3. Develops language relevant to the study of English.

4. Identifies and describes language forms and features of particular texts which shape meaning and influence responses.

8. Articulates and represents own ideas in critical, interpretive and imaginative texts.

10. Analyses and synthesises information and ideas from a range of texts for a variety of purposes, audiences and contexts.

Marking Criteria:

Students will be assessed on how well they:

·  Engage with the details of texts in order to respond critically and personally

·  Articulate and represent own ideas in critical, interpretive, and imaginative texts form a range of perspectives

·  Analyse and synthesise information and ideas into sustained and logical argument for a range of purposes and audiences

·  Draw upon the imagination to transform experience and ideas into text demonstrating control of language

·  Communicate orally in an effective manner

·  Demonstrate written technical accuracy, such as spelling, punctuation, paragraphs, grammar, sentence structure
