THE SHOOTOUT IN MANHATTAN

KANSAS EDGES K-STATE IN CHAMPIONSHIP

28th Annual KSU – Ed Chartrand

Memorial Soccer Tournament

MANHATTAN, Kan., Oct. 22 — After two preliminary games ended in 0 – 0 ties between Kansas and K-State, the Championship between the two was decided by a shootout Sunday Afternoon in Manhattan. This was the 28th year of the KSU-Ed Chartrand Memorial Soccer Tournament this weekend in Manhattan---one of Kansas’ longest and best known sports traditions.

The games are named after Edward E. (“Fast Eddy”) Chartrand, a Leawood, Kan., resident, who played for the K-State Soccer Team. He died suddenly in May 1979 at the age of 22 of a never determined cause. More tournament history and information can be found at

After a day of games played in rain and cold, Sunday brought some sun and much dryer conditions. It was too late for Wichita State and Iowa State who could not seem to muster any real offense on Saturday. St. Louis University was impressive at times but just never seemed to be up to the par of the two Kansas teams.

K-State played impressively and had several close shots on goal sparked by K-State Junior, Holden Cook. Even after two five minute overtimes, neither teams could muster a ball past the goal line. The game had to be decided by a shoot out where each team get 5 chances to score a goal with a one on one, timed action against the goalie. “No one likes to end a game in a shootout. But the nature of soccer requires it when continued timed play could go on almost indefinitely, “ noted head referee Gerry Snyder.

KSU Women beat Nebraska 6-1 under the lights Friday night in an exhibition game associated with the tournament but lost to Kansas Sunday by a score of 2 – 1. Colorado won the women’s division of the KSU - Ed Chartrand Memorial on October 1.

“This tournament and its legacy started way back before soccer was popular or even the cool sport to play,” noted Art Chartrand. “When I played at K-State in the late 70’s, most of us were just football rejects. The quality and skill level that these kids play at today is now world class. My brother Ed would be amazed and pleased to see these tremendously skilled athletes carrying on in his name. “

During the tournament, Kansas State soccer senior Matthew Campbell, a 2003 graduate Shawnee Mission West High School athlete received a scholarship from the KSU-Ed Chartrand Memorial Fund. The scholarships are presented each year to members of the KSU men's and women's team and are funded by private donations as well as donations by the Chartrand Charitable Foundation of Olathe, Kansas. Campbell played under Coach Gordon Wetmore at SM West in Overland Park, Ks. “ I am very proud of Matt. Matt was a smart and hard-working soccer player who always wanted to make his teammates and himself better. He combined a spirit of seriousness while keeping the effort in the proper life balance. I am very happy for Matt and his family. I wish him continued success” Wetmore said when advised of the award. Matt Campbell is from Overland Park, KS and majoring in Mechanical Engineering

The tournament is a joint venture of the KSU Men’s and Women’s Soccer Clubs to promote soccer at the college level and thereby enhance the opportunity for young soccer athletes to continue playing the sport beyond high school at major state universities. All of the planning and the administration of the tournament is handled by volunteers. Local Manhattan organizers include David Darling of GTM Sportswear and Dennis Cook of Flint Hills Distributors. Cook has been a local chairman of the tournament since 1980. KSU Department of Recreational Services under Dir. Raydon Robel and Assistant Tim Stoeckline contribute critical logistical support.

Home field is the Midwest’s premier soccer field on the K-State campus inside the restored Memorial Stadium Complex. Scores of all games below.
