Dr. Jack O. White Music Scholarship2017
Former students and friends of Dr. Jack O. White have established the Dr. Jack O. White Music Scholarship to be awarded annually to a band or music student graduating from George Wythe High School who plans to pursue higher education. The scholarship is administered by the Wythe County Public Schools Foundation for Excellence.
Dr. White was the Director of the award-winning and nationally known GWHS Mighty Maroon Band from 1954 to 1959. During his tenure, the band represented the state of Virginia at the Tobacco Festival in Richmond, Eisenhower’s Inaugural Parade, the Junior Chamber of Commerce Parade in Kansas City, and the Lion’s Convention in New York City. The band placed first place at the Southeastern Band Festival for five consecutive years. His legacy also includes the high school choir. Dr. White was later the Music Director at Elon Collegeand remained there until his retirement in 1989. He then moved back to Wytheville, immediately establishing the Wytheville Community Band which included many of his former students and other community musicians. He directed the band until 1999 and continues today as a lead trumpet player. He also directed the Wytheville Community Choir and has provided an orchestra for many of St. Paul United Methodist Church musical programs.
