0130-0300 Participate in COMPAC B Exercises. LARSON OCE.
0740: Quarters for Muster and Inspection.
0745:Officers Call
0755:General Quarters Set Condition 1AA.
0800-1000: Conduct Z-17-AA Competitive Target Designation and Acquisition Exercise.
1015:Secure from General Quarters; set the High Line Detail.
1030:Receive LARSON Observers from USS Walke.
1100:Secure the High Line Detail.
1115:Set the Underway Replenishment Detail.
1130: Refuel from the USS CHIPOLA.
1215:Secure the Underway Replenishment Detail.
1230:Set the High Line Detail.
1245:Return Z-17-AA Observers to the USS Walke.
1255:Set the Helo Detail.
1300:COMDESRON 23 Staff Operations Officer arrives via Helo.
1315:Commence Commodores Informal Material Inspection of ship.
1545:Set from Material Inspection.
1600:Divisions assemble on Mess Decks for Career Counseling Instructions.
GENERAL NOTES:
- The Mess Decks will be secured commencing at 1630 today in order to paint out the entire space at one time. It is anticipated that Breakfast may be somewhat delayed as a result, tomorrow morning.
- The ship’s arrival in Long Beach will be delayed approximately five days because of a requirement to enter San Francisco for a 3 day celebration of the ship’s 23rd anniversary beginning 6 April. Company Officials from the Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine and the Boston Naval Shipyard are flying in to the West Coast in order to commemorate the building and commissioning of the Larson. Ceremonies will take place on the day of arrival at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard at Hunter’s Point. Information received yesterday indicates that civic and business officials from the Bay area are going all out to help the ship make this a memorable occasion. Some of the outstanding events already planned for crewmembers are as follows:

- An official invitation extended by Horace Stoneham, owner of the San Francisco Giants to witness the completion of a complete re-sodding of the outfield area at Candlestick Park.
- A complete tour of Chinatown in rickshaws donated by the Yellow Rickshaw Company.
- A man versus machine milking contest, which will be held at the Cow Palace from 2000-2400 on the evening of our arrival.
- A Flower Eating Contest at Golden Gate Park stayed by the I-EELRA-THI Fraternity from the University of California – Berkley.
- Uniform for our arrival in San Francisco will be Whites. A Captain’s Personnel Inspection will be scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Whites in preparation of our arrival.
- During the recently conducted Damage Control Competition, it was discovered that as a result of earlier rough weather operations in the Sea of Japan, the ship has suffered a compound crack to an amidships stench, which has weakened crack to an amidships stench, which has weakened the keel longitudinal support members in the vicinity of Frame 110. It is expected that this can be repaired in San Francisco in approximately 24 hours. If the damage is more extensive than is apparent at present, dry-docking may be required; however, our return to Long Beach should not be delayed for than two weeks.
- The following message has been received form COMCRUDESPAC:
“It gives me great pleasure to welcome the Destroyer men of ASW Group Five upon their return to CONUS. Your many months of performing complex and arduous tasks has earned you the rest to which you may now look forward to. It is with sincere pride that I take this opportunity to relate to you that this performance has not gone unnoticed by higher authority and to inform you have been honored with a nomination to escort the newest member of the Force, USS NEW JERSEY, on her initial deployment to Southeast Asia in mid July, 1968.”

Any person subject to this code who while in the performance of duty, or while embarked in ship or unit of the Armed Services of the United States, is found whistling, to the general distraction of crewmembers shall be punished, in the time of implied or declared hostilities, by confinement for no more than 15 years or as a court-martial may direct.
