Writing Expectations in the K-2nd Grade Classroom
Where are we going? By the end of the year
Opinion Writing –W1
Kindergarten:
Students will:
Ø Write at least three sentences on topic
Ø Include a clear opinion and reasons for the opinion
Ø Use capital letters for beginning of sentences and correct ending punctuation
Ø Use correct spacing for letters and words
Ø Use phonetic spelling
Ø Spell known sight words correctly
1st Grade
Students will:
Ø Write a paragraph including 5-8 sentences
Ø Include sentences which provide an opening, supporting details, and closure
Ø Use different types of sentences including compound sentences with correct punctuation, capitalization, spacing, and subject verb agreement
Ø Use correct spelling for CVC, CVCe, CCVCC words and known sight words
Ø Know who the audience and purpose is for writing
Ø Include a picture that matches writing
Ø Include a title
Ø Use transition words
2nd Grade
Students will:
Ø Write multiple paragraphs (3-5) which contain 3 or more sentences on topic.
Ø State two or more reasons to support topic
Ø Use schema and text resources to support reasons
Ø Include an introduction and conclusion
Ø Draw a conclusion which ties reasons together in a closing statement
Ø Use 2nd grade conventions for grammar capitalization, punctuation, spelling – sight words and EDL words should be spelled correctly
Ø Handwriting should be legible
Informational Writing – W2
Kindergarten:
Students will:
Ø Write at least 3 to 5 sentences on an informational topic in a beginning paragraph format
Ø Include facts to support the informational topic
Ø Use capital letters for beginning of sentences and correct ending punctuation
Ø Use subject verb agreement in sentences
Ø Use correct spacing for letters and words
Ø Use phonetic spelling
Ø Spell known sight words correctly
Ø Incorporate vocabulary relevant to informational topic (content vocabulary)
1st Grade
Students will:
Ø Write at least 5 to 8 sentences on an informational topic
Ø Include sentences which provide a topic, supporting facts (at least 3), and closure
Ø Use different types of sentences including compound sentences with correct punctuation, capitalization, spacing, and subject verb agreement
Ø Use correct spelling for CVC, CVCe, CCVCC words and known sight words
Ø Use phonetic spelling for unknown words
Ø Include a picture that matches writing
Ø Include a title
Ø Use transition words
2nd Grade
Students will:
Ø Write multiple paragraphs (3-5) which contain 3 or more sentences on an informational topic.
Ø State two or more facts or definitions to support topic
Ø Use schema and text resources to confirm facts and definitions –dictionaries, thesaurus, Internet
Ø Include an introduction and conclusion
Ø Draw a conclusion which ties topic together in a closing statement
Ø Use 2nd grade conventions for grammar capitalization, punctuation, spelling – sight words and EDL words should be spelled correctly
Ø Use legible handwriting
Ø Revise and edit to improve writing (CUPS and Writer’s EYE)
Narrative Writing – W3
Kindergarten:
Students will:
Ø Write at least 3 to 5 sentences on a narrative topic
Ø Include a beginning, middle, and end
Ø Include story elements- characters and setting
Ø Use capital letters for beginning of sentences and correct ending punctuation
Ø Use subject verb agreement in sentences
Ø Use correct spacing for letters and words
Ø Use phonetic spelling
Ø Spell known sight words correctly
Ø Include a picture that goes with writing
1st Grade
Students will:
Ø Write at least 7 to 10 sentences on a narrative topic
Ø Include beginning, middle, and end
Ø Include story elements
Ø Use different types of sentences including compound sentences with correct punctuation, capitalization, spacing, and subject verb agreement
Ø Use correct spelling for CVC, CVCe, CCVCC words and known sight words
Ø Use phonetic spelling for unknown words
Ø Include a picture that matches writing
Ø Include a title
Ø Use transition words – provide sequence
2nd Grade
Students will:
Ø Write multiple paragraphs (3-5) which contain 3 or more sentences on a narrative topic
Ø Include a clear beginning, middle, and end
Ø Include story elements
Ø Include main idea and relevant details in paragraphs which include actions, thoughts, and feelings
Ø Use 2nd grade conventions for grammar capitalization, punctuation, spelling – sight words and EDL words should be spelled correctly
Ø Use multi syllable words
Ø Use legible handwriting
Ø Revise and edit to improve writing (CUPS and Writer’s EYE)
