WORLD RECORD HOLDER TO RUN 20thIKANO BANK ROBIN HOOD MARATHON

Steve Edwards is no stranger to the Ikano Bank Robin Hood Marathon having ran 19 of them spanning back to 1987. He will be lacing up for this year’s event on Sunday 25th September in hopes of continuing in his world record breaking achievement of 1000 marathons sub 3 hours and 20 minutes, of which he has already completed over 730.

The 53 year old ran his first race at the age of 18 in 1981 and is now one of the most successful multi marathon runners in the world. Steve has set several records including running 500, 600 and most recently 700 marathons in the fastest average finish time. 'He began his 1000 marathon feat in 1988 after meeting members of the 100 marathon club and decided that he wanted to push his physical boundaries to 500 sub 3:30 races which he conquered in 2012. He explains “I intended on retiring after the 500 asoriginally I had people doubting I could get there. However, having reached that targetI felt as though I still had more in me so decided to see if I could double it. My aim is to complete the 1000 before I turn 60 which will be extremely challenging- especially trying to staymotivated, injury freeand fitting it around a full time job!”

Steve lives in Moreton-in-Marsh with his wife Teresa who fully supports his world record breaking journey. His running has taken him all over the world including most of Europe, New Zealand and the USA but he enjoys the marathons in his home country the most. Commenting on his 20thIkano Robin Hood Marathon Steve says “I always enjoy my return to Nottingham and I’m obviously quite familiar with the course although there have been subtle variations over the years. Having run my fair share of marathonsI really like the course because it’s scenic and the runners receive so much support from the locals.”

Judith Manson, Race Director, comments “It’s fantastic to have a world record breaker in our midst and we wish Steve all the best in his pursuit of 1000 marathons. It’s an exciting year for the race, especially as we are hosting the British Athletics Half Marathon Championships which is a huge honour. We look forward to welcoming runners of all abilities in September from the elite to those taking part in their very first race.”
