“Chemical Disaster: Lessons Learnt”

Delhi State Centre and Safety & Quality Forum of The Institution of Engineers (India) jointly organized a Technical Programmeon the topic“Chemical Disaster: Lessons Learnt”on January 14, 2017 at Institution’s Premises. The activity comprised of Technical Talk, Movie Screeningand Certificate Presentation.Lt Gen (Retd) J S Ahluwalia, Chairman, Safety & Quality Forum-IEI was Chief Guest on this occasion.

Welcoming the audience, Shri Devendra Gill, Chairman, Delhi State Centre apprised about the purpose of the programme mentioning that main objective is to discuss the lessons which were learnt after the biggest Chemical Disaster, which happened in India in 1984 and the resolve nation took to prevent such disaster in future and also prepare itself to handle emergencies of such large scale. He informed the audience thata series of such programme will be organised on monthly basis, wherein important areas of Safety, EnvironmentQuality practices will be discussed. Chairman urged the members to give their suggestions for the topic of the programme they wish to attend in future.

Screening of Movie of “Bhopal Disaster: A Prayer for Rain”was madeduring the programme. Movie highlighted the Key-reasons and step by step lapses that caused release of poisonous MIC Gas on December 2, 1984 at Bhopal whichultimately led to one of the biggest Chemical disaster recorded in the World History.

Lt Gen (Retd) J S Ahluwalia, Chairman, Safety & Quality Forum-IEI congratulated the New Chairman and Honorary Secretary, Delhi State Centre-IEI for the initiatives taken to organize such important event. Gen Ahluwalia hoped that the team will take this mission forward and spread awareness about the safety in important areas. Gen Ahluwalia in his address stressed on developing a culture of safety in order to have sustainable result

On this occasion, Shri J K Mehta, Regional Manager, South Asia, World Energy Council and Shri Umesh Purbey Addl. VP & Head- HSE & Fire, BSES, Yamuna Power Ltd, werehanded over the certificate of Quality Safety Award2016 conferred on them by The Institution of Engineers (India) during 31st Indian Engineering Congress held in Kolkata.

Shri Praveen Kumar Singh, Honorary Secretary, Delhi State Centre and Director, Safety & Quality Forum - IEIproposed the vote of thanks.

It was a very informative technical programme and was appreciated by all the Participants.Nearly 125 Corporate members, Students, guests and invitees attended the function.
