The Future of Immigration to the United States

A Presentation by Lisa S. Roney MPA and Milton J. Roney MPA

Even though U.S. birth rates are declining, the US population continues to grow mainly because of immigration. So, to some extent, the future of immigration is the future of our country. But while immigration levels have always shaped the history of the United States, they are themselves dependent on push factors in sending countries as well as pull factors here. The Roneys will discuss trends related to population, the disconnect between popular views on immigration and legislation, and the implications of possible future changes in immigration policy for the United States. They will then outline prospects for control of unauthorized immigration, the future of the current unauthorized population, and whether the United States will change policies on permanent and temporary migration to better meet US needs – if that is not already the case.

Lisa and Milt Roney worked a combined 75 years at the Immigration and Naturalization Service/Homeland Security. Lisa worked primarily in policy, planning, and research and served on several task forces and the staff of the Select Commission on Immigration and Refugee Policy. Milt worked primarily in enforcement policy with the Border Patrol, Intelligence, and Detention and Removal. Milt also spent a year with the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service lobbying for immigration reform in 2006. Lisa continues to work part time as a consultant and is currently working on an evaluation of the E-Verify Program, an electronic employment verification program that is now mandatory for employers in several states and for Federal contractors. In the fall of 2011 the Roneys co-taught a course on immigration hot topics at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at American University
