[General Description of the Programme]
·  The BETD is a unified general preparation for all teachers in Basic Education, combining a common core for all, with opportunities for specialization in relation to phases of schooling and subject areas.
·  Based on the Principles of National Education Reform outlined in Toward Education for All (MBEC, 1993), including access, equity, quality, and democracy.
·  The BETD combines: (a) face-to-face sessions; (b) distance education mode using an Activity Booklet and a Support Material Booklet for each module; (c) school-based activities (focused/graded observations), and (d) other components such as self-study group meetings, assessment tasks, and portfolios,
·  Subject Areas for the BETD program include:
1. LPE (Lower Primary Education)
2. ETP (Education Theory and Practice) - More info in the "Approach/Model used" section.
3. English Communication Skills
4. School based activities
[Approach/Model Used]
ETP (Education Theory & Practice), which is a core curriculum of the BETD Programme, is made up of the following 12 Modules:
Year 1
·  Module 1: Reflecting on the Experiences of Learning
§  Designed to help teachers to use their experiences as learners to start the shift from teacher-centered to learner-centered education.
§  Units introduce following professional themes: (a) knowledge, skills, and attitudes; (b) learning environments/contexts; (c) communicating; (d) planning; (e) assessing; and (f) evaluating.
·  Module 2: Reflecting on the Experiences of Teaching
·  Module 3: Observing the Learner
§  Helps teachers to look at their classroom practices from the perspectives of the learners.
§  Special needs and human development are revisited.
Year 2
·  Module 4: Reforming the Processes of Teaching and Learning 1
§  Gives ideas to assist teachers develop an Action Plan that will help them to make the teaching and learning in their classrooms more learner-centered.
·  Module 5: Reforming the Processes of Teaching and Learning 2
·  Module 6: Linking School Experience & Community Experience 1
§  Extends teachers’ understanding of the purposes of practice based inquiry in the BETD programme.
§  Teachers reflect on their views of special educational needs in order to extend their knowledge and understanding of special education needs.
Year 3
·  Module 7: Linking School Experience & Community Experience 2
§  School and community knowledge is revisited with the focus on the issues of environmental awareness and sustainability.
·  Module 8: Working Together for Change 1
§  Encourages teachers to examine and think about personal reactions to change over the preceding ten years.
·  Module 9: Working Together for Change 2
§  Prepares teachers for the practice-based inquiry project that they will carry out in their schools as the major part of the final year’s work for ETP.
·  Module 10-12: The Execution and Reporting of a Change Project
§  Teachers produce action plans for their major projects, implement the plan, collect data, analyze the data, and write up the project as a case study.
