Part 4: Diving Deeper into the Tabs – Part2

Part 5: Labs, Reports, and Starting to Scavenge

Part 6: Scavenger Hunt

Videos are provided as files with a .swf extension. These .swf files are designed to be opened in all major web browsers. If the file does not open in your browser you can download a free .swf player at the Adobe site:

Step-by-step instructions for completing the activities are provided below for those who do not prefer to view the .swf files.

You will observe 6 short videos that will orient you to the demonstration electronic health record system (EHRS) environment. This will prepare you to participate in a learning activity that will enable you to apply the concepts provided in the lecture material in hands-on lab experiences. You will learn how to navigate within the example EHRS, and gain familiarity with a generic HIT user interface, the general structure of an electronic patient record, and basic functionality.

Objectives:

Identify common components of a clinical HIT system

Demonstrate beginning level competency in maneuvering inside of the demonstration EHRS

Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt for various data values within the HIT demonstration system is designed to further familiarize you with components of, and navigation within, a representative clinical HIT system. Instructions and the scavenger hunt “search list,” are included below. The scavenger hunt videos (#5 and #6 of 6 - as mentioned in Activity 1) are included in Unit 1.

Additional guidance for utilizing the VA CPRS system can be found in the VistA CPRS Users Guide:

  • Reports – p.365
  • Maneuvering Through the Coversheet – p.147
  • Each tab of the interface is covered in great depth using the printed word and screen illustrations for students who may find this approach more meaningful than the included videos. Detailed discussion of all of the CPRS functionality is available in this resource guide. The full discussions/instructions of the CPRS begin on page 147 and finishes on page 365.

Please note that the instructions in the video file may not correspond exactly to the manual. The printed manual may use different patient names and reflect a few minor differences from the video tutorials.

It is strongly recommended that you view the 4 short video files that will orient you to the VAVistA CPRS interface, organization of VAVista data, navigation of the VAVista CPRS system, and the example of how to complete the Scavenger Hunt prior to completing this assignment. Your instructor will point you to the location of these five-minute video overviews. Document all of your answers and submit to your instructor.

  • Log in to VAVistA using the ACCESS Code and VERIFY CODE that has been provided to you by your instructor or institution. The login is case sensitive.
  • Click on the “OK” button
  • VAVistA CPRS will open. From the patient selection dialog box that appears – chose Seven, Inpatient.
  • Examine Mr. Seven’s record using the “cover sheet” tab.
  • For the Scavenger Hunt assignment, you must find and document the answers/data for each of the below questions
