The Opportunity:

WSDOT is currently looking for an enthusiastic engineer who has a passion for creative solutions, innovation, and can provide success in collaborative efforts. The I-5/JBLM Corridor Project Office in Tumwater is currently seeking to fill a Transportation Engineer 2 position. This position will be responsible for the preparation of plans, specifications and cost estimates for key highway and bridge projects. The future incumbent will play a pivotal role in meeting the agency’s goals. Work assignments are designed with professional development in mind.

This position will perform the following work:

·  Develop, produce, and review plans, specifications, and cost estimates.

·  Serve as a designer performing a variety of skilled project development work.

·  Interpret data, identify problems and develop solutions using sound engineering judgment and guidelines on complex transportation projects.

·  Effectively utilize design software to develop designs, which includes alignment and profile sheets, channelization, drainage, and right of way boundaries.

·  Determine bid items, calculate quantities, and estimate costs to perform construction work.

·  Provide technical training and mentoring to team members.

·  Communicate with other WSDOT offices, consultant staff, outside agencies, and the public to obtain and share information as necessary to support the project.

·  Travel to project sites for field reviews.

·  Perform data collection and/or survey work in the field.

·  Other duties as assigned.

An ideal candidate for this position will have:

·  Certification as an Engineer-In-Training and one year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 OR two years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent.

·  Solid understanding of engineering principles, mathematical formulas and practices of highway construction.

·  The ability to read, interpret, understand, review and produce contract plans, specifications, and estimates.

·  Strong communication skills both in the written and verbal form.

·  Ability to operate computer software to produce plan sheets and graphics.

·  The ability to traverse uneven terrain.

·  Valid driver's license

Note:

This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee’s initial 30 days in this classification.
