Some supervision of junior research staff
Job Purpose:
As part of the NERC-funded ‘Assessing Health, Livelihoods, Ecosystem Services And Poverty Alleviation In Populous Deltas’ project and the CARRIA-funded ‘Deltas, Vulnerability and Climate Change: Migration and Adaptation’ project, to undertake research intochanging deltaic environments. The main focus is the analysis ofecosystem services and poverty alleviation in coastal Bangladesh, and impacts and adaptation to climate change in Ganges-Brahmaputra delta (Bangladesh and India), Mahanadi delta (India), Nile delta (Egypt) and the Volta delta (Ghana). The job will focus on the issues of integration within these projects under the supervision of Professor Robert Nicholls.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities:
- Working closely with the delta research team at the University of Southampton and other relevant members of the two consortia, developing and maintainingrelevant integrated assessment models of the study deltas which address the projects’ aims and objectives. This will include conceptual development and design, developingand using databases, constructing and validating algorithms, and producing software.
- Overviewing and collaborating with the work of partners engaged in a range of detailed assessment and modelling activities across the project, including hydrodynamics and sediment transport, morphodynamics, water quality and quantity, mangroves, agriculture, fisheries,ecosystem services, poverty, human health and well-being, and migrationto facilitate the integration theme across the project.
- Undertake travel to consortia members in the UK and internationally (specifically Bangladesh, India, Egypt, Ghana, and potentially others) where deemed appropriate.
- To help in the preparation of policy briefing documentation for use by relevant stakeholders such as the UK and Bangladeshi, Indian, Egyptian and Ghanaian Governments.
- Regularly disseminate findings by preparing publication materials for referred journals, presenting results at conferences, participating in workshops or exhibiting work at other appropriate events, and providing material for the project web site.
- Carry out administrative tasks associated with specified research funding, for example risk assessment of research activities, organisation of project meetings and documentation. Implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely formal reporting and financial control.
- Assist Ph.D. activities associated with the project where appropriate
- Carry out occasional undergraduate supervision, demonstrating or lecturing duties within own area of expertise, under the direct guidance of a member of departmental academic staff.

Special Requirements:
To attend national and international workshops and conferences for the purpose of disseminating research results.
Experience in developing numerical models with at least one high level programming language (e.g. Matlab, C++, etc.) is essential.Working with probabilistic models or agent-based models will be an advantage.
A willingness to travel to the study countries is essential.
