Purpose of Document

A work package is the control document for an individual or group to undertake a piece of work. It contains information such as product descriptions, constraints, work-plan and sign-of and reporting arrangements. It cannot be undertaken until the project manager or programme manager (as appropriate) has specifically authorised it.

The [Project] defines three distinct types of use for the work package document:

to control the delivery of work associated to pre-project activities such as the production of a feasibility report, or undertaking proof-of-concept (POC) work;

to control the delivery of work within a defined stage of a project;

to control a self contained ‘small piece of work’.

[The Work Package must be negotiated to ensure that:

  • all risks have been identified and understood;
  • that the Product Description is accurate and relevant;
  • that the team or individual understands the requirement and has the resources and capability to do the work;
  • that the team or individual is committed to delivery.]
