Reading: Students are continued to be assessed at their current independent reading levels and those assessed will be bringing home books this week at this level. Please note that it is expected that students in grade 1 are reading at an independent “E/F” for the next reporting period (end of March) with smooth (fluent) reading and good comprehension. We continue to review our “C.A.F.E Reading Strategies” (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expand Vocabulary) to help us become better readers! “Picturing Penguin” will be introduced as a new “Comprehension” strategy (to help understand what we read) by “picturing” what is happening in our minds this week. Also, “Reread Rabbit” will be a focus for “Fluency” (smooth reading). He reminds us to reread a sentence or page so that it sounds smooth, with expression and without mistakes! We....don’t...want..to...sound..like...a...robot! Remember: give a detailed retell (Don’t forget “Jabber the Reteller”!) of what happened in the stories you read! We will introduce contractions this week (i.e. do+not= don’t). This is a short way of putting two words together. When we put two words together, we will see an apostrophe and some missing letters. At Home Challenge: What contractions can you think or find in your stories?

Word Wall Words: Please continue practicing reading and writing our “No Excuse” End of Grade 1. It is important that your child read these words automatically (in a snap) when he/she sees them in a story.

Math: We will continue with adding and subtracting to 12. It is important that students have a solid understanding of adding and subtracting basic facts before moving onto solving problems involving larger numbers. Please continue practicing your doubles and “near doubles facts” (for a challenge) at home! Have fun playing “Doubles Cover Up” game sent home with your child before Christmas. Please encourage your child to “count on” from the larger number or to use their knowledge of doubles facts when playing the game. This week, we are introducing/reviewingsubtraction where they will learn to use “counting back” as a strategy in a problem solving context (i.e. 5 frogs were in the pond. 3 hopped away. How many frogs are left? So, 5....4,3,2..2 frogs are left!)They will also be writing matching subtraction number sentences (i.e. 5-2=3). Practice at home by giving your child an addition/subtraction story and have them model it using small objects around your home. Have them write the number sentence that matches their story.

Writing:This week we will focus on true “small moment/seed” stories and keeping our reader in mind when we write! Students are encouraged to take their time to do their neatest printing, using proper “Conventions” (spacing, stop marks, upper/lowercase letters, spelling)and s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g their story to include more interesting details (“Ideas/Content”). This week, we will introduce how to add “fancy words” into our true stories that make them more interesting to our readers. Students completed an independent piece of writing last month (without meeting with me for help!). Look for their marked piece to come home this week in their Show What You Know Folder. Please don’t forget to review the story with your child, sign it and return it with all the other content in the “Show What You Know Folder”, by Friday. Thank you! Keep up the wonderful writing!!! 
