ORIENTATION:

  • Meet at the hospital according to Clinical Facilitators instructions given at pre-clinical meeting

RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS:

Uniform:

  • Students must be in their correct uniform as per their education provider. No jeans are to be worn
  • Uniforms must be clean and changed daily if students are providing direct patient care.
  • Uniformsshould be non-restrictive and allow full unrestricted freedom of movement. All postures should be able to be undertaken safely without compromising the dignity of the staff member or patient.
  • Appropriate clean footwear must be worn at all times and meet the OHS requirements i.e. Shoes must be non-slip with closed in toes
  • Students must at all times wear their student ID badge

Jewellery & Piercing:

  • Should be kept to a minimum so that offence or occupational health and safety hazard is not caused and hand hygiene standards can be achieved.
  • Sleeper or stud earrings are acceptable.
  • Facial piercings are discouraged, however, if present, should be kept to a minimum and be in the form of a stud so that occupational health and safety risks are minimised.
  • A wedding ring may be worn but should be removed prior to performing aseptic procedures.
  • Bracelets or bangles are not permitted (medic alert bracelets permitted)
  • A wrist watch may be worn but should be removed prior to performing aseptic procedures and activities that may place the patient at risk, i.e. manual handling.

Finger Nails:

  • Nails should be natural, clean and sufficiently short to ensure safe patient contact. Nail polish and acrylic nails are not permitted to be worn whilst on placement. Students presenting on placement with acrylic nails will be given 24 hours to have them removed prior to placement being cancelled.

Hair:

  • Neat and tidy, off the face and collar. Long hair should be neatly tied back and not able to fall loosely.

Beards:

  • Neat and tidy

Head dress:

  • Where a scarf or veil is worn as part of religious observance, staff must secure the garment so that it does not interfere with work practices.

Bum bags or Joey Bags:

  • are not to be worn

Mobile phones:

  • Personal mobile phones are not to be used in the clinical area.

Students are required to:

  • Be punctual at all times for commencement of shifts, returning from meal breaks etc. If the student is late for any reason they will need to notify the ward.
  • Notify the ward and their Clinical Facilitator if off sick and when returning. If any makeup time is required this is to be discussed with your education provider and the provider will put in a formal request for makeup placement. Do not request this makeup placement from the ward.
  • If a change of shift is required, the student will need to negotiate with Clinical Facilitator.
  • Ensure they do not discuss the placement on any social media(i.e. Facebook, Twitter etc) and adhere to the providers confidentiality policies.
  • Be aware of the length of their placement and when assessments are due and ensure they inform ward staff/CSC/preceptor with adequate notice when assessments are due. Do not expect or assume on the last day that appraisals will be done if you have not adequately informed the ward staff of this previously.

Have evidence of:

  • Immunisations
  • Police clearance ( current within 3 years)
  • Hand Hygiene Australia certificate
  • Completion the SA Health online orientation

This evidence needs to be with the students throughout their clinical placement as it may be requested at any time.

Car Parking:

  • On site car parking is available. A refundable $10 deposit for car park access card and $1 per week of placement is required i.e. 8 week placement fee will be $8 + $10 card deposit = $18 in total. It will need to be paid in full on the first day of placement. Cash onlyplease
