Santa Barbara Dental Hygienists’ Association Presents

“Management of the Anxious Patient”

From the 5th edition Walter Hall: Decision

Making in Periodontics

written and presented by

Dr Richard Nagy, DDS

Course Description:

Fear and anxiety can constitute a barrier to optimal care. The anxious patient can also be difficult and stressful to handle. Therefore, being able to recognize fear and anxiety is an important part of overall patient management. Thus the treating practitioner must decide on appropriate stress reducing methods. These methods will involve non-pharmacologic means and maybe some form of sedation. This presentation will present a decision tree that will guide the dentist/hygienist/staff team to make sound decisions. An ability to successfully manage the anxious patient will allow treatment to be performed effectively in a more peaceful, focused and joyful way.

Upon completion, the participant shall be able to:

  • Understand the pretreatment patient anxiety evaluation and assessment
  • Create an anxiety relieving environment
  • Define self-goals and practicalities
  • Stress reduction protocol

The participant will have a thorough understanding of:

  • Anxiety control measures and sequencing
  • What creates a trusting relationship with the patient
  • Creating their own stress reduction protocol
