Capturing What Works: Case Studies

The purpose of this template is to capture good case studies across our industry, not to add to our collective workloads, but to ‘shine a light’ on excellence and innovation so that we are more easily able to share it with others– locally, regionally and nationally.

Using a standardised template will enable us to build up an ‘evidence chest’ of good practice that is co-ordinated, consistent in style and hopefully captures all the ingredients of ‘what worked’ and why. It will also help highlight any areas of learning and development that need to be addressed.

(300 words max)
The ‘One Network’ is a collaboration of partner organisations that have a collective interest in the development of Physical Education, school sport, and physical activity and more broadly seeing children and young people develop through their engagement in these activities.
The ‘One Network’ emerged from a project that involved a delegation of officers from Lincolnshire Pe and schools sport network visiting Endicott College in the USA and as a result it brought the Lincolnshire Pe network together. It was really the catalyst for change in the county.
The group whilst not restrictive is relatively small in numbers but represents a larger workforce and the main strategic players in the Lincolnshire PE network. The membership at present includes, Active Lincolnshire (csp), Inspire + (local education charity), Youth Sport Trust (Nat. charity) and the School Sport Partnerships of Lincolnshire.
The ‘One Network’ have a pilot county status with the Youth Sport Trust piloting a county delivery model with the Youth Sport Trusts membership team.
Crucially the ‘One Network’ works as one group with mutual benefit being the key driver for the collaboration across the group membership and the wider organisations and members who they represent. The largest sector being represented is the schools network as every ‘one network’ member works with schools in some capacity.
The One Network is essentially a special project group.
The Good Practice in Detail
Provide a thorough explanation of the good practice.
The ‘One Network’ is a relatively new group and it has been in existence for around 9 months. Over this period the group has set a number of targets with the main targets being:
·  Run a successful County Pe Conference with at least 100 attendees (Achieved)
·  Launch further programmes off the back of the conference e.g. #lincsschoolsstandup
·  Explore possibilities to collaborate to provide the schools network with comprehensive buy in packages that support their Pe and Sport Premium requirements.
The group meets regularly to ensure that the planning and preparation for the events are going well but also to ensure that the network is full up to date and aware of the changes to the pe and sport landscape. This may include political or local changes however the group has been set up with expertise to enable the accurate interpretation of these changes and predict the likely outcomes. Importantly the group is able to quickly change strategy representing the views of the partners. This can only be done via fully understanding the network they represent.
The network via the CSP has developed a brand which is neutral of any one organisation and therefore enables an easier collective buy in, in what is an increasing competitive industry. The changes to the way funding is devolved by central government, into the primary school sector in the form of the PE and Sport Premium funding has led to a market forces factor and therefore once established networks such as the SSP’s are faced with competing for trade.
The network has a mission to work collectively to ensure the best possible outcome for Lincolnshires younger population.
Outcomes
Identify key success factors and outcomes achieved e.g. outcomes for child/young person, successful collaboration with partner organisations, Third sector involvement, etc.
The ‘one network’ has had the following successes and outcome:

·  The network is building a bank of case studies reflecting successes from within the PE and sport sector
·  The network is regularly publishing newsletters sharing good practice throughout the network
·  The network is now moving forward with new projects such as #Lincsschoolsstandup – a project to encourage schools to promote a more active curriculum
Barriers Experienced / Lessons learned
What helped or hindered the work? What advice would you give to others? How sustainability of the outcomes for the child/young person have been addressed? With hindsight, what, if anything, would you have done differently?

The ‘One Network’ concept whilst simple is practically more difficult to set up and implement; this being due to the semi competitive partners sitting around the table. The difficulties that the group had was agreeing to work together for mutual benefit and trust that working together in an collaborative approach results in partners having better outcomes. In addition the group would work to use resources being used more effectively and efficiently and ensure that ultimately the experience had by children and younger people in Lincolnshire is of a high quality and likely to have long term impacts.
It is important to note that getting the right partners together; who are likely to be able to agree on an approach and most probably the partners need to be brought together at the right time. This is crucial to the success and a good lesson for others to learn from.
In hindsight this group or a group with similar outcomes could and should have been set up in years previous – perhaps the groundwork on relationship building and timing were not right at the time.
